Teflon Cleats for 3G Shoes
« on: January 10, 2014, 02:06:54 PM »
Does anyone know where I can buy replacement teflon cleats for my Tour Ultras?  All of the other cleats are available from Buddies and BowlingBall.com, but no one seems to carry the teflon cleats.  Thanks in advance for your help

How about making your own?  The ones that come with the Tour Ultras are very thin.  All you need to make your own is to go to the store and buy some industrial strength velcro then get some teflon discs.  You can find the discs on eBay or if you PM me your mailing address, I can send you some.  I bought a couple hundred and still have some left.  :)
After you have the velcro and the teflon discs, cut the velcro to fit the holes in the sole and attach the velcro to the teflon disc.

I have been making mine since I bought my Tour Ultras years ago and before then I was making them to fit my Lind Exxxtras.  So has Charlest.

If it helps at all, they're very simple to make your own. I buy the right sized circular piece of Teflon, get some industrial strength Velcro from Lowe's or Home Depot, sand the back of the disc lightly to stick better, cut a piece of Velcro larger than the disc, stick the 2 together and trim the excess. Takes maybe 1 minute or less to make each one.

I get my discs from this Ebay seller:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/rubbermann7/m.html?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEFSXS%3AMESOI&_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2654

The size needed is 1 7/32", but 1 3/16" does as well. They're 1/16" (.062") thick. If he doesn't have them listed, I just email him and ask what he wants for a minimum purchase (can be 100 - 500). FYI They come in different colors; sometimes I got white, sometimes blue. All of one order will be the same color.

If you like, send me your name and address via a private message and I'll send you a few I made as well as a few plain Teflon discs.

EDIT: I see MI_2_AZ posted similar; we have shared this info and sent each other sample of what we each had obtained.

I wanted to make sure Bob got the info he needed before potentially hijacking the thread, but I have a question for Charlest and MI 2 AZ...
I'm using the Teflon cleats as suggested, and they are great for preventing knee pain. I actually switched just one cleat to a tan colored insert (forget the designation) last Thursday and the difference in  slide and pain was more than noticeable.

One question... The discs become pitted over time. Just curious while we have a thread going... I wonder if you've noticed any change in usefulness or established a maintenance schedule for replacement?
Thanks

Lefty,

Oh, definitely, over time, teflon is hard and continual stepping on tiny stones that people bring in from the outside and the debris on the foor will make them rougher and stickier. I do change them regularly to insure slide. Examine them regularly and change them before they deteriorate and reduce your slide. I haven't calculated the price per disc bu tit has to be infinitesimal compared to the health of your hips and knees and bowling scores. If they're sticking, change them; if they look pitted, change them.

Also you don't have to change al 7 discs at one time. Changing 1 or 2 is usually enough, especially the middle four where most of the weight from the ball of your foot rests. Most times changing 2 is enough to change my whole slide.

The secret then is that a change of 1-2 can yield a significant difference. Cost is almost nothing. I think rotating them in 1 at a time is in order and will start breaking in a new set. Just curious what you had found, thanks for the reply...

I was out all day so I missed replying to this.  Charlest covered it very well.

I too find that the teflon discs will pick up small hard objects that will get embedded in them like dirt or even some glitter from the cosmic bowlers.  I change them out as needed but usually only one or two.  I find that they will wear down significantly if I leave them in for awhile so I am amazed that the originals from 3G are so thin.  Over the holiday break I replaced all of the teflon discs and I noticed the increased slide compared to the worn ones.

Everyone will be different on this but on my Tours I was using the front five as teflon and the back two were one of the leather cleats.  On the old Exxxtras I think I was only using three teflons but they were aligned differently than the Tour Ultras.  Making these for the Tour Ultras is a lot easier than for the Exxxtras.

Yeah, I said that.  Just didn't use caps.   :)

You'd have had to try making a few for the Exxxtras to appreciate the difference.
