Tournament time...
« on: November 04, 2009, 05:45:01 PM »
I've decided to switch to an all-900 tournament arsenal this year (I carry 7 balls to tournaments). I've got 6 of them settled but I'm in between on the last one.

In the bag (from most oil-handling to least), and I'm not going to bore you with exact drill patterns and stats unless you ask for them:

1) 900G Break S-75
2) AMF Nkryption Code (drilled Girard and then highly polished)
3) AMF The Heist
4) AMF The Heist Pearl
5) Lane #1 Chainsaw (poured by 900G)
6) Lane #1 XXXL Starburst (not poured stateside, I know, but it was post-900G conversion)

I can do one of three things. I can either get a real oiler (my S-75 has a light polish but I'm not messing with it, as I love the way it plays now), which I'd have to buy and drill. Or, I can add something in between the S-75 and the N-Code, or between the N-Code and The Heist solid. I'd prefer to put one there, as there's a bit of a gap.

I have a Break Pearl and a Break Point Pearl, but those two balls are much more aggressive than I was expecting, even though my BPP carries a fairly weak drill pattern. I also have a bunch of old-school AMF stuff lying around (XS, Ninja Master, etc.). I'm pretty stumped on which way to go.

jess, i would go with more of an oiler for tourneys so sticking with 900 global i would go with a bounty hunter or a breakpoint. preferrably a bounty hunter guys in my sunday morning league have been killing it with the BH. just my opinion good luck with your selection

I would agree with a better oil ball, my experience with polished stuff on oil conditions are not very good (thats just speaking for myself), a Bounty Hunter or Mega Friction would work (maybe a Break Point with some surface) it would give you more area on a heavy oil shot compared to your S75, thats my 2 cents and good luck with your purchase.

Thanks guys. I thought about doing that but I so rarely see oil these days that even the "hard" tournaments I've been to lately have been more about who could manage the dry rather than who could hook it. I play predominantly on the right half of the lane and have decent hand, so the S75 ends up being too much for most conditions.

Although I'd rather stay with 900G, I do have a Columbia Reaction Roll from that same manufacturing plant here at the house, and that thing is definitely an oiler in every sense of the word. It has very low game traffic.

There's a little bit of a gap between the N-Code and the Heist solid that I'm not all that comfortable with, but I can manage it. I thought about adding a Link but I think the two Heists would duplicate it.

How would an original Bounty work as an oiler?

Lunatic between N Code and The Heist...

Think with right drilling and surface prep would be a very nice fit.

My S75 is silly strong and really haven't found enough oil even with a weaker layout and some polish on it. The low RG on it really gives the ball early hook on even the heavy stuff for me.

Hope this helps!

Thought about the Lunatic. Also perhaps trying to find a slot for a Clutch.

Grab a The Hack on Ebay while you can. This is the 1st time Ive ever said this, it hits so hard. Its earlier then the S75, and doesnt cover as many boards, but it flings pins every where. The best way I could describe it is a Gladiator solid on steroids. Awesome rolly ball, that still has a backend. I had so many, for lack of a better word, crappy strikes tonight Im super impressed.

So named because former exempt pro Patrick Girard apparently has a bunch of stuff drilled this way.

Thanks...basically a full-roller layout easy enough.

I don't know if it's too late for suggestion or not...I have a long pin Maniac drilled up and it fits awesome between my N'Code and S-75 with similar layouts.  I like to start with and when the mids start hooking a little too early I go to the N'Code.  I get the lenth back with a sharper move, I have it (N'Code) at 2000 with light polish.

Just really fills the hole in the arsenal.

In the bag:
Bounty
Break S-75
Termianl Velocity (pin up sanded to 1000)
N'Code
Maniac
Villian
Heist Pearl
Orbit Extreme W.B.
Angle Red/Blue
Boogie

I like the suggestion of the Maniac, a very underrated ball and can fill in the gap between the S-75 and N-code
