Clutch Mini
« on: September 17, 2009, 02:09:49 AM »
AMF Clutch (color blem)
14 lbs 3 oz gross weight
3.25 oz top weight
3-3.5 “ pin

Drilling layout: 4-1/2 (P2P) x 5-3/4 (MB 2 PAP)
Pin up: at 1:00 to ring
MB in the thumb
X-hole in thumb quad, 2-1/2” below midline.
Finish – Box Finish

Oil Pattern: Freshly oiled THS, wood lanes, with squeaky back ends, medium - heavy volume inside of 12, 50 units at 4th arrow,  42 ft buff.

The Clutch is the strongest ball AMF has produced IMO, even with the higher rg core number it has plenty of mid lane roll with an explosive motion off the spot. Most bowlers who do not see heavier volumes of oil will have difficulty using this ball even though it has a 4000 finish. The cover is the strength of the ball, it responds to friction similar to the Bounty Hunter, it reads the pattern very well, I saw no over under and did not expect it with a solid veneer. I saw plenty of oil flare rings, producing 5” of flare, more than enough hook potential by anyone’s standards. When others on the same pair ran into the transition and began to be affected by carry the Clutch kept motoring on handling it like is never existed.

I began the night using all the oil I could find available, standing 40 set down was 21-22 with the break point at 10-8. Anything outside of 8 the Clutch found too much friction causing it to over shoot the pocket or be very high flush, I tripped a few 4’s and had a messenger get me out of a 4-9 situation. A two board tug would yield a flat ten. The angularity off the spot is awesome, not a S/S reaction but for a solid a very strong angular motion.

As the night wore on the ball speed was bumped up to keep it from running away, hand position changes were made to promote more skid up front to keep her in play. I had a very productive night for the 1st night out with the Clutch; carry was excellent, even questionable hits carried with mixers and messengers flying from both sides of the pin deck. The Clutch is for heavier and longer volumes of oil, anyone purchasing it will find it almost useless at box finish on medium and shorter oil unless you have very high ball speed. The Clutch is the “real deal” it meets and exceeded my expectations.

So this ball is even stronger than a Mega Friction?

the MF particle load and is earlier and a hard arc going down lane, the Clutch is later moving more angular solid cover crossing boards later down lane.

Steve,
This is Dan. Your review of the Clutch is right on ! In league last night, with box finish on the Clutch, It was equal to 3 guys on my lane with Virtual Gravity's ! This ball is a beast, and alot less money than some high end aggresive equipment. It is a step down from my Bounty Hunter, which is only used on floods.

Is this the strongest ball on the market in it's price range?  Not counting the Ogre Particle.

I am going to say yes, Many have already said that from what I can remeber. But also the magazines gave it an unreal rating, and it was reviewed very close in total hook to the Bounty Hunter. They also said it was an amazing piece of equipment as far as control, carry, versatility. AMF has a winner wiyth this one.

The only one to beat it is the Ogre particle, but then again it is a heavy load solid particle. They would have different shapes.

i got one coming and can't wait to see what the hype is about.

I agree with all the statements said above.  I have one drilled rico that out hooks my Mega Friction that is drilled 4 1/2 X 3 3/8.  I have a second clutch coming that we are putting quite the crazy drilling on and shining it up.  The ball is good!
