New/current Orbit Extreme & Nighthawk
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:53:39 PM »
I just saw an AMF ad in the current issue (September 2007) of BOwling This Month. In addition to showing the new ball, the Heist, they showed that the Nighthawk and the Orbit Extreme will still be made and another new ball, the solid resin Orbit Extreme. (FYI the name is no longer "AMF300", but returns to "AMF".)

Although the Orbits and the Nighthawk use that forbidden "dash into the past", old technology, the famed Superflex coverstock, these 3 balls compete with any ball out there for power, versatility and utility.

A good fact about the Orbits is they use dynamic strong cores: RG of 2.46 -2.5 and RG differentials of around .040". That's an important factor I believe.

I remain amazed that "real" bowlers get their "panties in a knot" when a ball dares to "insult them, by using such old technology as SuperFlex. If it didn't work so well, I could understand; the fact that it does and people refuse to even consider just amazes me, but as I have said before ....

Love Superflex covers.

Continue to look for a ball like The Thing of 2.53 and .045.  I like differentials of .045 and you just don't see many.

My two favorite balls for THS league both have Superflex coverstocks.  Versatile, long lasting, and consistent are the words I would use for them.

I am actually looking for another Cold Fusion or Victory/R.

I've been thinking about a Nighthawk.  Most say it's very close to the original.  Good arcing ball I remember.  Might have to look around for a cheapy.  Got any ideas where I can pick one up?

Super-flex has been the longest lasting resin on the market for quite a while. This durable cover doesn't take a lot of prep work like some others.

The Columbia made nighthawks are pretty mild, if that is what you seek go for it.

I would wait for a new batch of them from global900, maybe a stronger cover will be used.

The thing was a solid/pearl mix i think a sidewinder would be a good move after thinking about this and actually having the ball.

It's not the use of old technology. That's fine. The problem was with Columbia300 in particular, not being creative enough over a period of time. They got lapped by Brunswick and Ebonite because they failed to really change until it was too late. Classic pieces are great because house shots don't need the latest and greatest, but the other "Big 2" developed new covers and cores.

Only the standard place - Buddies. I think it was $110 or thereabouts delivered.

But then everything's mild for you, Barry. (no offense).
The BTM review indicated a medium-heavy oil ball, with the stock surface (1000 grit matte) and with a very strong backend. A light polish shold make it usable for medium oil.

See, I think you're wrong there. Even tougher shots should be easily handled by balls like the NH. No, that's the wrong approach. It's not the toughness of the shot that requires the use of the latest technology (read biggest backend!).

You don't need new technology. period. You just need the right ball for the oil and the lane and the release.

Just to throw in my two cents...when i took my Nighthawk to 1000 with a light coat of magic shine over top of it, it became a monster in the backend...very versitle ball as far as cover changes goes

Leave it OOB for an even rolling medium/heavy oil piece

Polish it to stand left and open up a medium lane condition
