What a surprise!
« on: November 24, 2009, 01:21:27 PM »
Heard a lot of BR people talk about HOT SIMPLE GREEN BATHS to remove oil from bowling balls. I have done this successfully before.

Sitting around , doing nothing, today I decided to give the HEIST a bath. Have had no problem with the ball but I was curious to see if oil would appear in the pail of water!

Left the ball soaking for longer then usual .. when I went to retrieve the ball the water was cold.

The water was slightly discolored so I'm sure there was some oil extracted. The strange thing was the ball was a different color. It looks like all the color is gone and it is a very pale (almost white) pink.

I really laughed when I saw the results .. but .. I was wondering if anyone else ever had problems with hot baths changing the color?

The issue isnt the hot water bath.  It is the fact that you let the water get cold.  I think it may be a matter of applying some heat to the ball and doing a light surface refresh on the ball spinner to get back to the balls natural color.

Thanks .. I think NOW I realize what happened! Without thinking I prepared the HOT BATH and then sprayed the SIMPLE GREEN (full strength) onto the surface of the ball .. then put it in the HOT WATER.

I think the recommended method was to CUT the SG 50/50 with water. All the previous times I did CUT .. this was my foolish MISTAKE!

Didn't realize this till I was in bed tonight and thought of it .. VERY FOOLISH and I got a laugh from it! I guess I was the only one that did this .. took the color right out of the ball .. didn't realize that it was THAT strong.

Am I seeing this right or is it a different problem?

Joe,

That could very well be the problem along with leaving the ball in a bit too long. Would recommend letting it dry out (24 to 48 hours) at least and then just hit up the surface with a bit of abralon or wet sand to see if can remove the fine top layer and if that brings back the color.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Mike .. some of the color has returned (been about 12 hours) what a catastrophe .. the color of this ball was different to begin with .. now it's REALLY DIFFERENT! But that's ok .. it always was one of my favorites .. going to use it today!

Thanks again for your help!

I do remember reading something about water possibly getting absorbed into the coverstock and then creating a sort of haze or phasing.

I believe it was mentioned that it will go away as the water evaporates, or might have to bowl a few games to help get the water to come to the surface, or maybe a little bit of heat.....sorry, I really don't remember.

Joe, wish I could help you more, but this site lacks a useful search function!

I tried doing an advanced Google search, but it only seems to bring back results from the review section of the site and not the forums.

Thanks .. appears you are CORRECT .. as time goes on (about 18 hours now) the color is returning. Not being aware of what to expect .. I was totally surprised at the condition when I removed the ball! To my eyes it was just about white! Unbelievable how the color is returning!

Guess I jumped the gun .. thanks for all the info. I also tried to search prior comments but it's difficult to determine when you see only a TITLE!

Thanks again!

Leave your equipment in the trunk over night up in the midwest.
You'll see lots of funny colored bowling balls come jan.,feb. or mar..
