ULTRA Radical Pearl - anyone?
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:38:45 PM »
Does anyone have experience with AZO''s Ultra Radical Pearl (the purple one)? there is no review (yet), but I remember that someone posted some quite positive comments about it?

Anyway, I''d like to know for which conditions this one is most suited - with its higher RG and high differential it looks like a medium condition back end monster, but coverstock strength is hard to assess... If anyone has some info or experience, some impressions (or a comparison with another ball) would be highly appreciated

Thanks a lot in advance!

Ah, thank you for the tip - I think it was mainzer who posted things about the Storm-prodiced AZO balls a couple of time ago, but was not sure.

I own and have used the Ultra Radical Pearl.  It's drilled with the cg between the thumb and finger holes centered to the palm of my hand and the pin is about two inches above and centered above my finger holes.  The ball is simply extraordinary.  It is skip/flip without equal and I have thrown just about every premium skip/flip ball made or have seen near all in action at one time or another - none approach the power at the breakpoint as the Ultra Radical Pearl.  It can handle most lane conditions but will squirt a bit on flooded lanes and there simply isn't enough room to keep it on the lanes if they are toast but, anywhere in between those two conditions, medium dry to medium oily, the Ultra Radical Pearl is a monster.  In the right hands, this ball is unstoppable unfortunately for me, I am not that accurate nor do I recognize the changing of the lanes quickly enough and pay the price by getting a split.  If you can throw a consistent shot and can follow the oil as it transitions on the lanes, this ball will change your world.  For me, the first ball out of my bag is the Pure Tactics simply because it is more forgiving however, when I do throw the Ultra Radical Pearl, people four/five lanes away come down and ask me what I am throwing - it is that impressive.

Thanks a lot, guys! Your help is highly appreciated - esp. since my arsenal situation changed during the weekend: my Igniter, drilled for true skid/flip, cracked (probably after oil extraction in the bucket - looks as if the dual density filler did not cope well with the warmth?). And out of a sudden, the URP might become its spontaneaous replacement.

Specs are quite good - it has 3.5-4" pin 2.66 ounces TW, and I will probably have it set up with a 4.5x4.5 or 5x5 drilling - I need something above my Renegade with length but more angle after the break point, for medium conditions. The Igniter (*sniff*) did this well, esp. with its hard shell, and now the exotic AZO ball might fill that sudden gap, maybe even better than expected.

Hi hi, I am expecting my URP to arrive today... Checking catalogue pics of the ULTRA series, I found something odd, and maybe someone whio drilled one of these up knows for sure: due to the large core (and upon illustration), could it be that the ULTRA balls with the mushroom-shaped, large core are massive pieces without filler, like Lanemasters' balls? The higher RG value might support this, too...

I might know when I have the ball punched up, just curious

Ah, thanks a lot! I suppose the Pearl will be the same - does not make any difference concerning drilling, and I will know when mine is punched up (a very pretty ball, by the way, VERY dark bluish purple overall) - hopefully today. But the catalogue pics and the huge core aroused this suspicion

Ball has been punched up - and as far as I can tell, it seems to be massive, without filler. The pin ended up more than 1" above the finger holes, and in the thumb hole no filler could be found at all, and the finger holes showed some grey material after about 1" of coverstock. If I interprete the core diagrams correctly, this should be the core's top.

Many thanks to everyone's input!

So far two trials: maiden flight was on a flat sport shot (training pattern for EBT 2010 in Munich), and on a crowned pattern with wide, buffed areas (not a THS with dry outsides, though).

Interesting ball, works fine so far. With my 5x4 setup, it goes very long, and reacts strong to release changes - in a sense that it seems to like revs. So far I had more success with it adding tilt and some revs to control breakpoint and back end than taking hand out but keeping the hand behind the ball. In the latter case, it will hardly rev up at all, but I think it is a consequence of the layout.

Cover appears to be more aggressive than e.g. Accu-Tread or PK18 - maybe it is 1st generation Reactor?

A review with video footage is in progress, but so far I'd call it a literally solid, simple ball with no surprises, except for the fact that it can turn the corner very sharply, if it has some dry area and good hand!

All of the balls from all of the companies:  Storm, Bruns, Ebonite, Lane1, on and on, I stumble across this purple pearl for 40 shipped NIB on Ebay.   I put a label drill on it (I just wanted to play around with a 1:30 drill), and now I use this ball every week on our second shift broken down THS and Im averaging about 230 with it since Thanksgiving.   Its funny when you stumble across the unexpected.

The ball is very angular, recovers from any type of dry.  I does not love oil, but being we have seen any oil in years, this ball is perfect for my situation.  I purchased another one for a rainy day.

A half ten is not a great shot.  No, you shouldn't have carried it.
