Winter BFDT Week #1
« on: August 25, 2004, 06:23:27 AM »
The first week of the BFDT will be 9/5 - 9/11.

I will make a post in this forum for everyone to add your scores to.  I will answer any questions, but please don't PM me your scores.  It's much easier for me to have them all in one place.

Also, I need one more person to join (or I can just axe off Andy, lol).  Lefty210 never gave me an average, hasn't returned my message, and missed a lot of weeks last year.  I will probably be less lenient on non-posters this year.  I don't have time to track people down, and your partner deserves someone who is interested.

I only meant to temporarily lock the signup post.  I didn't know you couldn't unlock it.

Strider - is there a specific format we can use to post our scores to make it easier for you to record them? (are you using a parsing program to draw the scores out of the page?)  Should we post just the games or the games and the series.

Thanks

I'll need to take a blind for the first week, since I don't begin any league until September 12.

I'll get the teams up soon.  I either need to hear from Lefty210, or get another person to sign up.  Last year I made up the sheet, then had to adjust about half of the teams when another team signed up.

janderson - Just post your individual games and series.  I just type them into an Excel spread sheet.  I only use the series, but like to give recognition to big games.  What is a parsing program?  I love to find anything to make my life easier.

No problem Debs.  There might be one or two blinds the first week, but I hated to wait too long to start.

First person to post gets Lefty210's spot.  I'm off tomorrow, and can assign teams since I'll have the time.

Strider, when are the scores due, and does the 11th count as week 1 ending, or week 2 beginning...My first day is the 11th.

I'll take a stab at this one, since the 5th is on a Sunday, and the 11th is on a Saturday, the scores for the 11th would be used for the first week.

Since you are bowling on the last day of the week, he would probably like to see the scores no later than Sunday.

Hey Detective Strider, did I get it right????

Wife says I've never been right in my life, want to prove her wrong.

Welcome aboard s1nger1.

Correct SrK.  There's a first time for everything (I'm sure that will be your wife's reply as well).  The week is Sunday to Saturday.  The 11th is week #1 since it's 9/5 - 9/11.

I know everyone doesn't have access to a computer during the weekend, so please have your scores turned in by the Tuesday after the week ends (9/14 for week #1 for example).  The recap will be anywhere from Wednesday to Friday depending on when I get all of the scores, and when my schedule allows.

OK, looks like we have an even number of participants, so we're all set.  I should have time tomorrow to add the names into my spreadsheet and know who will be partnered up.  Good luck everyone; especially whoever gets paired up with that Strider character.

Strider -

Since this is my first time participating, I have a couple of questions?

1) If I started league on 9/3, that week's scores would not be used at all.  My scores for the 10th would be reported as your Week #1 even though it's my week #2?????

2)  How many weeks does the tournament run?

That's correct LadyW.  Your first week of league would not be used here.  Your second week (9/10) will be used for BFDT week #1.  The number of weeks is up in the air, but usually 30-32.  It depends when most people are done and if we skip any week for the holidays.

Yeah, you have to be careful when using the term anchor when I'm around.  I can sink a team with the best of them.

I suppose I'm the boat's engine then?  STrider said that whoever is my partner pretty much gets their own personal sandbagger.  Gotta love us rapidly improving newbies.

What is a parsing program?

I should have said "string parsing".  Simply put, it is a program that seeks for specific patterns in a body of text and performs certain actions on the text based on what it finds.

Basically, I was thinking that you might do a big copy of the entire posting web page (when people post their scores) and then paste it into a parsing program.  The parsing program's job would be to filter through the text you feed it, filtering through all the letters, numbers, symbols, drawing out the scores automatically.  For that to work, people would need to enter their scores in a specific format so the parsing program could find them.  The format could be something like:

##name SCORE week:99 999-999-999:999

For example, a valid entry would be

##strider SCORE week:12 229-198-210:637

The object is simply to create a format that is easy to follow (for posters) and differs from the rest of the text in the page (so the parsing program can "find" the scores).  Then the parsing program saves you 99% of the data-entry problems.

Anyway, it was just a thought, my being a computer geek just assumed you had some sort of parsing program set up...

Sounds cool.  Is that something you buy or create?  I have some knowledge of computers, but even if I had one, it would be hard to get everyone to report their scores in the proper format.

At least I made an Excel program.  I think RooCat used to do it all manually.
