Back to bowling after 12 years- need arsenal advice
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:43:07 PM »
I'm back to bowling after a 12 year absence and wanted some advice on some balls to fill the arsenal.  Before I left the sport, I bowled regularly in a league and also some regional tournaments and am looking to get back to that this coming summer.

A little background on my game- I am primarily a stroker, prefering to play the outside of the lane.  That is my bread and butter.  However, I can move inside and hook the ball if need be.  At the time, my average was between 175-200.

The first 2 balls that I purchased (and reviewed on here) are the Roto Grip Rising Star and the Roto Grip Nomad Dagger.  Both of these have 3 inch pins, and used a label drill with skid/flip on the Rising Star and control on the Dagger.  Also, both balls don't have a weight hole and the CG was kicked out.  These have worked out well so far.

The spots that I am looking to fill are with heavy oil, and possibly a light oil ball below the Rising Star.  Some ideas I thought of were possibly going with a Dark Star as a step down from the Rising Star, and either a Theory or possibly a Virtual Gravity Nano for heavy oil.

I'm not limiting myself to just Roto or Storm either.  I have used Columbia 300 in the past, and even thought about some balls from 900 Global, Track or Hammer.  Any feedback would be great.

The Dark Star is awesome, but its not a ball that will do well if the heads are fried...go weaker than that. For Heavy Oil the Nano is it! The Track 715T is also great in oil but abit weaker than the nano, but great ball!!

I have to agree with vkowalski. Storm seems to have hit a home run with the Nano. While there are others out there, right now, this is THE heavy oil ball of choice.

As for a light oil ball, I'd suggest a Hammer Red/Purple Backlash if you like or need a lot of backend.
If you want pure control, try a Brunswick SLingshot.

If you prefer a urethane, try the Brunswick Avalanche Urethane. It's a polished pearl urethane that is just great for dry. It has more backend than any other urethane on the market, but less than almost any other resin. It is also a pure control ball that still hits.

I will give you the best advice -

Get yourself a 900 Global Break (s70), Break Out, or even The Eagle - all versions of the same ball.   Easily one of the top 10 balls of the past 5-10 years!

Im thinking about getting a break out or an Eagle to try it. I love my Bank Pearl! So much it has made me very curious to try more 900 Global. Although I believe it would be similar to my 505T which I truly love!

The Red Backlash clears fried heads great, but does have a lot of backend. Its a stand left and wing it right kind of ball for me when things are completely fried. I will say, it is pretty controllable and it carries a ton. It has fit right under my Dark Star great. I even shoot 10 pins with it because you can flatten it out easy with hand position. My white dot finally gave way three weeks ago after 21 yrs...lol

If you really like the Nomad Dagger, look at the Nomad Solid. Its a great very underatted ball that clears heads well and handles oil well at OOB, but becomes a beast if you take to 2000AB. I loved it while I had it!!

Having a ball last 21 years is really good.  After all, the White Dot was and still is 1 of the best plastic balls around when it comes to that.

One other question.  Does anyone have the Taboo?  That was one other ball I had thought of.

I wanted to say thanks for all of the suggestions.  As of tonight, I became the owner of a new Storm Virtual Gravity Nano.  The layout on here is similar to Storm's 4x4x2 except I have a 2.5 inch pin and a P1 balance hole.

A good tip I got from the guy at the pro shop is a center about 15 minutes from where I live that has been using Route 66 lately.  Needless to say, that will be perfect to try out the new ball.
