bowling lingo
« on: January 27, 2005, 04:57:25 AM »
I thought it would be good to have a thread where we can ask our questions about the lingo of bowling.

For instance, I just learned that going Brooklyn means hitting the wrong side pocket.

With that being said, I'd like to ask what it means to "get your fingers through the ball?"

Not totally sure myself. I think it means to come up the back and hit up on the ball instead of come around the side.

Buddies Pro Shop site has a section of Bowling Terms that explains a lot of them.  --  JohnP

"Coming through the ball" means that you remind yourself to release the fingertip ball just as if you were pushing your ring finger through it, or chase the ball with your hand.

It helps you keeping a low position, early leaving of the thumb and keeps your fingers longer in the holes to impart rotation. Guess it comes from a Joe Jowdy book (not sure)?

Hi Hoser, I am not sure about this (Language problem). As far as I know from books, "hitting on the ball" means that you artificially try to put rotation on a fingertip ball so much, that you rotate your wrist and end up with the hand coming awkwardly "around" the ball upon the release. This is wrong and even har´zardous to your health!

Ball rotation should only come from your fingers. Your wrist has to be kept stable. You may change the side turn of your fingers/hand, but never try to make the ball spin from your wrist - your wrist will not last long! This will become even more complicated if you use a wrist device which should prevent you from hitting up on a ball through a stabilized hand.
