First ball

Alright I am a 2 finger bowler who is deciding to switch to the proper 3 finger finger-tip grip.  I am looking at getting a ball, I am 19, 6'2 and 250 lbs, i dont know if that matters with what ball i get but Im not sure what lb ball i should get 14,15, and 16 lb balls all feel about the same to me.  I want to start fingertip bowling because I am gonna join a bowling league and I only bowl around 150-165 with the 2 finger grip I also enjoy bowling and want to get better.  I called my bowling alley and they said the oil switches from medium to dry oil, so for my first ball I was looking at the STORM Victory road, Motiv QZ2, and the midnight vibe.  But im not sure what I need, i am open to all and any suggestion, however I do not want a STORM tropical ball because a few of my friends have them and I want to be a bit unique

I've sold several of the Midnight Vibes and all the customers have been well satisfied.  I haven't sold any of the other two balls you mention, but I'll add that the Columbia Freeze is a great ball for the $$.  I think you'll want either a 15 or 16 lb ball.  If you think you might be selling it to go to a more dynamic ball in the future pick the 15 lb, there's a much better resale market for them.  Otherwise, physically you should be able to handle either weight.  Pinkie tuck is a personal preference choice, see how it feels and decide.  Tucking does tend to increase axis tilt.  --  JohnP

I have the Dark Star and it is a great ball, if I ever replaced it I would seriously look at the Midnight Vibe and QZ2...

The Roto Grip Rising Star would work very well for you. Number one, it is very new and you would be the only one with one in your league most likely. It is also very affordable and it is going to give you a nice controllable hook but also be able to handle all the way up to the medium oil you will be seeing.

Ok thanks for the help, i took your guys advice and ordered a Roto Grip Rising Star online! the local pro shop didnt have it but he told me its an exellent ball and that he will drill it exactly how i need it, I even bought a matching roto grip bag, and Im ready to get some strikes

You'll definiely like the Rising Star.  I bought mine about 2 weeks ago along with a Nomad Dagger and that is a great combo on medium-dry lanes.  Those 2 balls also got me noticed when I was throwing them since most people don't have those around where I live.

 

The core is great in the Rising Star, and the reaction you'll get is very consistant- pins stay low, and there is enough in the ball to send messengers to the 10 pin.  Also, it carries very well for me on off pocket hits. 

 

One thing of advice: the ball can check early once the lanes start to dry up a little further.  In this case, I found moving 3-1 and 5-2 where I was at worked well.

 

If you like the Rising Star and are looking to revamp some of the arsenal, you may also want to consider the Nomad Pearl (if you're looking for length and huge backend), Nomad Solid (more continuous), or the Nomad Dagger (a nice blend of the two, and has become my benchmark ball).  The Rotary Core is flat out awesome, and any of those 3 balls hit the pins like a freight train and sends messengers like noone's business.  Then for heavy oil, I just bought a Virtual Gravity Nano and plan to throw it later today on Route 66 (45 ft heavy oil pattern).

Getting in late to the topic...but don't be afraid to change the coverstock on your ball (Either roughing it up a bit or putting some polish on it, take it to the pro shop). Not all out of the box finishes work for everyone. If you are struggling getting to the pocket then ask someone (hopefully someone who knows something about bowling) to watch you throw a few times. Sometimes that little tweek can be a BIG DIFFERENCE!

I think you would be hard pressed to find better entry level balls than the Onyx, and Midnight Vibes. They are a great compliment to one another. The Onyx hooks more total boards, and the Midnight is more angular. For the money, they are hard to beat.
