looking for a new ball
« on: December 07, 2005, 02:47:42 AM »
Ive just started bowling seriously with a hook lately and have been using a old blue urethane hammer thats been passed down for awhile, ive gotten my average up to around 160-170 and bowled my high game of 267 the other night and want a new ball i bowl in mostly oily to med oily conditions, i usually stand in about the middle of the lane throw out to 2nd arrow i throw about medium speeds.
im looking at:
ebonite the one
ebonite xxxcel
columbia action
columbia epx
hammer hawg wild
but any other suggestions are welcome thx.

Well, I would probably eliminate The One and the Action from that list. Although both are great balls, I think they'll be too flippy for you, especially if you're used to urethane. I would go with either the XXXcel or the Hawg Wild. Those will both tend to be a bit more roll-oriented, though both still hook quite a bit. Just my thoughts.

Given there are a lot of 'unknowns', but look at:
XXcel
V2 Power
Hawg Wild
Razor Blade
Diablo
Atomic Charge
Xecption

Those are just a few, but a better place to start, IMO

I'd choose the xxcel over the triple xl for it's carry down on the med-oily. They have the same back end reaction it's just how they get there. I hear a lot of good things about The One, but I won't get mine in the mail until tomorrow. I also hear a lot of good things about Lane#1's Hyrbrid Dirty Bomb. In selecting a ball, don't forget to take into consideration your own style, the ball should compliment it. If you're a stroker like me then I don't think you want something with late reaction and a strong angular back end. In my case I'm better off with something that revs early and has a smooth heavy rolling arc. For slower bowlers I'd suggest Apex Obsession for heavy oil or it's stronger hooking baby brother Over Time for Medium oil. If you have higher ball speed and revs (cranker) I'd suggest one of my earlier recommendations. JMO of course.
