new bowler here...
« on: February 14, 2007, 11:19:13 AM »
hey all just had a few questions and was hoping for some advice...

1. Ball selection - left handed, about 5'11" and 175lbs. usually use a 13lb house ball and want to learn how to hook (right now i'm using the no thumb method, but want to learn the correct way). People are saying balls are not as heavy if they fit right so i'm guessing maybe a 14lb with the fingertip drilling right?? Also, as far as oil goes i have no idea how heavy or not the lanes are at the place i go to...should i just look at balls for 'medium' oil?? Can you guys throw me a list of entry level balls to look into?? I've seen the Power Groove, Tropical Storm, and some Roto Grip balls mentioned...anything else??

Also, where would my thumb hole be drilled?? are there different placements for different techniques??

2. Once I get the ball taken care of, how can I learn the correct way to hook?? Spend some money on a coaching lesson? or a few coaching lessons? a video? don't want to spend TOO much money on lessons and that sorta thing...but if it's the best way...what other options might i have??

3. Can anyone recommend a good shop and/or coach in san diego, CA??

Go with step 3 first. Find a good shop in your area (can't help you out there), and they will help you out with a ball and possibly lessons. If no lessons, find a coach to help you get the fundamentals down. The proshop will help you with ball choice for you and will drill it with the proper specifications for you.

I agree with Ryan...find a reliable proshop and get to know the the pro(unfortunately I'm in NJ so I can't help you there either). Don't hesitate to ask questions and never stop learning. If you are unsure as to where to find a good shop hang around the center and get to know some of the better bowlers and they can point you in the right direction. A good shop will find the right ball for you and make sure the weight is good for you and they might be able to set you up with a coach as well.

And remember to have fun...good luck and good bowling

Lots of info here; http://www.bowling-info.com/index.php?template=Tips

Ball weight is what the bowler is comfortable with. When you drill for the thumb hole, the ball will feel lighter right away. Most people throw 15#'s. Drill for finger tips. Alot of people like to use grips, again that's what each bowler is confortable with. You want to get an entry to mid performance ball with a controllable drilling. Get a ball for medium oil. Ask the pro shop driller what ball and drill pattern works best for that house and your style. Bowl a few frames while he's watching.

3 holes of fun!!
