Next Ball ?
« on: January 04, 2009, 11:07:01 AM »
I am a right-hand bowler currently bowling with a Storm Ice. IT'S finger tip drilled and I average around 150 bowling straight up the boards. This ball does not hook, so I want a ball that will hook bowling straight up the boards. Could someone recommend a first time hooking ball that dosent hook too much, Thanks , JFB.

There are plenty just ask your proshop people.  If they try to sell you a 200 dollar ball they are ripping you off. Here are a few good entry level hook but not a ton bowling balls.
clash
bash
jazz
tropical storm
swarm

Weapons of choice

ultra zone
twisted solid
smash zone x 2
twisted fury

This is definitely not the easiest of questions to answer for a couple of reasons.  You say the Ice doesn't hook, which makes sense since it is designed to be a spare ball or for extremely dry lanes.  However, if you have some hand rotation, you should at least see at little curve with this ball playing "up the boards".  If you are coming up the back of the ball, an entry level reactive probably won't hook very much either.  The Ice you have is a great ball to learn how to really bowl with, in terms of creating a little more hand rotation and trying to get some reaction with that ball.  It can be frustrating at first, especially if you're just experimenting with trial and error, so maybe see if the pro shop operator can work with you.  Once you are able to make the Ice move, at least a little, then you can look at some better equipment, that will help your game even more.  If you buy a new ball before really knowing how to create some reaction, it could be a waste of money, or give you a bit of a false sense of progress in your game.  Not sure how much better you're looking to get, but building strong fundamentals first is always the best way to go.

Second that, but adding an entry level recative piece is IMHO not a bad idea. Playing a polyester ball, even with finfertip drilling, is sometjing different from a reactive piece, esp. when it has a dynamic core which helps it getting into a roll, and the grippier coverstock also changes the ball reaction. It would certainly be step up.

That said, gbrown has listed some very good options. IMHO, stay with a low end piece, it is anything you might need to develop your game, and to stay close to your Ice Storm.

To the list, I'd also add Brunswick's Power Grooves and the Tornados from Ebonite. The Tropical Storms also make a good start. Clash, Bash and Swarm are already a tad stronger, since their cores are more powerful, and they'd allow you to handle more oil (medium conditions), but also good options.
But IMHO, an entry level piece will be enough to build up your game and gather experience with a reactive ball. For a drilling, a simple label layout will be a good start (the ball will hook, but with a smooth, very controllable movement, no crazy back end curve), and I'd suggest looking for a more powerful ball just as the step after the first one.

I'm in a similar situation to jfb.  After 8 years off I've started bowling in an early night league again.  I've got a 150 average bowling with a Columbia 300 C/Beast I bought back about 1997.  I've managed to break 200 one night and it is not uncommon for me to have at least one good game per night in the 180-200 range.  Sometimes it is the first game, sometimes the third.  Reading and understanding lane conditions is a weak point for me.

Unfortunately the house I bowl in does not have a pro-shop so I can't get accurate recommendations based on observation of my league play.  A pro-shop at another house that was recommended to me suggested, after looking at my C/Beast but not seeing me bowl, about six different balls he had in stock that he thought would be an improvement for me.

  • Copperhead
  • Rawpower
  • T Road
  • Tantrum
  • Sidewinder
  • Anger Raw Hammer

But he didn't go any farther than that.  So I was sort of left picking a ball by appearance at that point.  I'm not sure that is the way I want to go about selecting my next ball.  Otherwise I might buy a Brunswick Swarm which is very pretty but I suspect might not be the right ball for my league conditions if I'm only going to have one new ball.

According to the display where I bowl I'm rolling my C/Beast at about 12-13 mph.

Any suggestions?

If the C/Beast fits your hand well, stick with it for the present  If it doesn't, find a good fitter/driller and have it plugged and redrilled.  Instead, spend the money on practice, preferably with a coach.  You'll get much more improvement than by buying a new ball.  --  JohnP

My C/Beast was drilled for me by Ed DiTolla and the pro-shops that have looked at it say he did a nice job fitting me.  They suggested on my next ball I would probably want to slightly change the angle of my finger tip holes because I've lost some finger flexibility in the last dozen years.
