Conclusive evidence...I still stink!
« on: March 26, 2007, 02:35:42 PM »
Even though my scores have been much better of late, I'm still one lousy bowler.  Find proof here, criticisms/flames/and general tearing down of my game encouraged!  What do I need to do?  Get down at the line.  Keep my hand behind the ball longer.  Not pushaway to the right?

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Oh, I guess I should tell ya it was a toasty weekend shot, some oil, but not much, and I was throwing my new Power Machine for the first time.

That is a unique approach.  I think I would actually fall down if I tried that.

That weird step, I can't seem to break it, at least not yet.  If I try to lengthen that step, I feel all out of kilter.  If only it was the NEXT step that was short like that, I'd probably be ok!

The approach is possible the hardest thing to change.  If you really want to fix it, get ready to go thru some pain, but don't give up on it.  Eventually the new approach will be as ingrained in your mind as you the current approach is.

And work on keeping your elbow in.  Looks like you are semi chicken winging most of your shots.

Ok here is my advice from a crappy bowler like me who has been coached by Billy Hall and Wendy Mac, you have some of my main flaws so i will work with you to fix them.

Timing is late from not setting the ball into the swing plane, as Billy taught me you need to learn to walk by the ball. You do not need to push the ball away per say but learn to get the ball started by the 2 nd step. I repeat do not push the ball out or up but just let it start to go into the swing during the 2 nd step.

Lead with the ring finger feel like you are reaching for the floor while keeping pressure on your fingertips, if you practice this method it will relax your thumb more if there is a grip problem it will known right there to be fixed.

Leading with the ring will help keep you from the dreaded chicken wing motion, i have another trick to help keep your left shoulder always ahead of your right  shoulder.

With your left hand on your 3 rd step push your arm staright ahead of you and twist your thumb clockwise to keep the left shoulder ahead. This will create strong rev rate and project the ball down the lane to a breakpoint.

Feel like you are landing the ball on the lane, keep your hand under the ball and keep your hand open on the follow through as jeff carter or pdw. Whever your hand goes it goes but get the arm to at least even with your head for the follow through.

Long and low as you can go, for me with a messed up left knee this is why i am not very good. I throw the ball pretty well but cannot stay on my slide long enough to really drive through the ball the way i know i could when i was younger.

pm me for any more advice if you try anything and if it works for you like it did for me, I probably coach better than i bowl that is my knickname in 2 leagues. I have worked with Billy Hall, Wendy mac Pherson, Sam Baca and Paul Renteria for many many hours, i can watch a bowler and help fix them easier than myself even though i have learned to make my injured method work for me.

Im not a great bowler but I have decent form for a beginner just as you are.

I would say you just need to get a little more compact. You start out pretty compact then you open you body up a lot at the end of your approach into your swing. I suggest that you try and keep the ball a little closer to your body through your swing and try to roll the ball instead of dropping it. When I say more compact I mean like snuggle up with your approach a little. You seem to let the swing path be wide from your body especially as you release. I try to let the ball swing past my left ankle very closely, Ive never hit my ankle in life, but I have hit my leg a bunch of times but great bowlers will hit their leg because they have a tight swing, but once you get more consistent it will definately happen less often.  More knee bend is also something you could use, but for bigger guys like us, its not as easy as it looks, because it feels like the weight of the world is on your knee. I have the same problem, Im working on this summer.

I think mrbowlingnut hit it right on the head, you're very late getting to the line with your ball.  I think if you slow your steps down but keep the same speed with your armswing your feet and swing should reach the line at the same time.

By getting your feet to the line first and then swinging late you tend to do a few things:
1. Lose slide with the armswing
2. open yourself up to pulling or pushing the ball
3. lose rotation and tilt on the ball because your body is squared up to the line already by the time you release

Hope this helps! Let us know how you make out.

Bowling nut said it all. I too have worked with Billy Hall and the stuff he teaches, most of it goes against common teachings. As stated earlier just walk by the ball. Pushaway's can inconsistent and imo opinion starts the muscled swing. I dont care what anyone says, pushing any object, requires force from your muscles. Your leverage isnt as good as it can be. Right before you release the ball, pause the video, look how far your hand/wrist is away from your sliding foot. The closer you can get to your slide ankle the more leverage you have, thus creating a stronger ball roll. Finally isnt your uncle Curt A, talk to him. That man is a walking gold mine when it comes to bowling.

Yes, Curt is my Uncle.  His game is so many lightyears beyond mine, it can be hard to get the advice I need.  I am still getting lessons from Brian Chilcutt at Hawthorn, though, and what he has me working on most now is getting down further.  He hasn't said anything about my weird cadence up to the line, though I'm sure that'll come up at some point.

If I can, I get out once on Saturday or Sunday for four games at my league house, Raymond's Johnsburg Bowl.  During the week, I usually get over to Hawthorn for a couple of games at lunch (sometime around noon), usually once a week (Tuesdays, as that's my league night) but sometimes more than once a week.  I just went today as a matter of fact.  I work at CDW in Vernon Hills, so I'm about 3 minutes from the alley.

Thanks, everyone.  I know I need a LOT of work better than anyone, but I at least like the direction my game has moved in.  If only I had video from a year ago!
