Vintage 1976 Star Trak MSG, Bowling Ball Video
« on: April 27, 2008, 12:04:09 PM »
Here's a video I made for a internet friend of sorts who sent me this ball and a Pro S.  Both made by Star Trak.  What I find is particularly interesting about these balls is the way they are pinned.  The pins are very small on these balls and both balls are pinned from both sides-near the label and on the other side.  The Pro S has a white pin and the MSG is black and it looks like a grain of pepper.

The MSG was made between 1975 to 1977 and acumulated 14 PBA titles to its credit.  The ball actually has a two peice baseball sized core that I believe is 1.5-2 inches beneath the label.  The MSG is about 2-3 boards less movement- with the way I was throwing it- in comparison to the Black Hammer.  The coverstock was surprisingly really nice and smooth to drill into.

Certainly an old school ball, very hard to find!  This video is intended for Star Trak - Pre Track fans, Vintage ball fans, and those who are into bowling history in general.  Those who love the sport when it was old school will likely find this video to be a fun watch.  This ball will certainly not strike all the time, however off the dry boards this ball performs really quite well.

Dick Haas if I got the name right was I believe the main guy who started Star Trak and now - if I am correct - believe he was with columbia then he went to 900 Global where he is at now.  There are certainly many fun and odd stories out there about this company.  Certainly ages old, but nonetheless neat to hear about!

The Star Trak was my fav ball in the 70s.
I carried 4 of them (in single ballbags).
All with different static weights, and cover finishes.

They were great balls.

Phil was one of the Dyno-Thane investors with Wayne Webb in 1994 when the Concept 4 came out???

Actually that was Phil Cardinale that went to Columbia after he started Track.

Dick Haas owned Star Trak from 1975-1990. But since he poured his own stuff instead of having someone else pour it, he had a lot of financial difficulties. Phil Cardinale and Paul Seegot were his urethane providers and when Dick could not pay his bills, Phil started Track in 1988 and made balls in Dick's factory until the debt was paid. Then they sold the machines to Columbia. Columbia bought Track and Phil started Dynothane. He sold that and started 900 Global.

Dick started Buddy bowling bags in 1991 and then ended up working for NASCAR.

Dick had the factory in Solon, Ohio, Ravena Ohio,  and his office was in Kent, Ohio. I have spoken to Dick several times. He was a nice guy who was a ball designer and exceptional bowler, not a businessman and he went into a lot of debt and many investors lost a lot of money.

It is not wise to bring up his name aroun Phil Cardinale as I have learned! I wrote Phil to get some information on Star Trak and he told me the whole story. Later, Dick Had Star Traxxx a name he used to sell off the X15 blems.

Great information there uptheboards, thanks for clarifying my error with Dick Haas.

In Star Trak's case, clay mineral filler and polyester were used in the core, the weight block was super hard styrofoam

Through the weight hole on the Pro S I can feel the inner core of it.  It has a totally different feel, its almost like a silky feel where as the coverstock surrounding it feels rough in comparison.  For some reason it makes me think of a coconut in a way.  Its interesting
