Best drilling for me on a Blast Zone
« on: June 28, 2008, 08:09:14 AM »
I picked up a new Blast Zone for a pretty good deal, 14lb -2 0z with a 3-4 inch pin.  Originally I was going to have this drilled with the pin above ring at 4 inch from PAP.  My PAP is 5 inches over and 1/2 inch up.  I am lower to medium revs, about 15mph.  Just to give you an idea, with my Strike Zone on a fresh shot, I stand with right foot on 20 and target around 10 to 12 at arrows, and use 7 board for a breakpoint at about 40 feet.

My question is how to drill Blast Zone to be stronger ball than Strike Zone for my style.  I can use Strike Zone (at 1000 grit no polish) for a fresh shot and stay with it a while. You can look at my profile for drilling specs. But on a really heavy shot that they are putting down at another house I would like to bowl at, the Strike Zone will skid hitting the pins if I throw at 13 mph.  It is really heavy.  Even if I increase the revs it is just too much oil for this ball. Since it works great at the other place I bowl I want to leave the Strike Zone as is.  If I slow the Strike Zone down too much it almost will have too much backend.

So I would like to drill the Blast Zone to handle a little heavier shot.  I need this drilling to early rolling and strong in midlane but without too much backend, so it doesn't leave bad splits.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Marker,

It sounds like you might be able to try a 2" pin from PAP below the fingers for early roll and tame backend. Mass bias around 45 degrees.
It's a great layout to tame the wet/dry conditions. You may have to experiment with the cover for carry, but start at around 1000 first. Good luck.

On edit, my Wizard was drilled with a 2" pin and when everything else was having a tough time, I could always find the pocket with that ball and layout.

Thanks for the suggestion, Lane.  I had a Columbia Action that was accidentally drilled (ball driller error) at 2 to 2-1/2 inches pin to PAP and it ended up being a great ball for the conditions you mentioned. Strong roll and didn't over react.
I am going to try your suggestion with the Blast Zone.

Thanks again, Lane!

I never tried the strike zone but the blast zone is a monster.for what you are asking I think I would try 4x45 pin down layout.the blast zone is very strong and smooth, great ball.
