Age of Brunswick GTB?
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:47:18 AM »
I bought a black rubber ball back in high school as my first ball and got it used from an older guy at our center.  Its a Brunswick GTB with the serial number printed on it GYVO448.  I cant tell if thats a capital O or a zero in there.  He said it was about 20 yrs old when I got it in 1984.  I found it again cleaning out the closets and was wondering how old it really is.

thanks

JD

I threw one new or almost new @85-86.  My recollection is it was Urethane not rubber although I believe the Edge which came a few years before was a rubber-urethane blend.

A friend states that GTB stands for God Tossed a Biscuit.... he swears that when you drilled a GTB the smell that these things released smelled like no being in our existence.

That ball was out in 85'. It was polished urethane around a rubber core.
Awesome ball. I'm actually looking for a 15lb undrilled GTB these days.

I bought the Edge II in '86...it was definitely urethane.  I had it up until 2003 when I became a new member of the "ball of the month" club.  Left the Edge II sitting on the rack at the bowling alley...definitely one strong ball for its time but one UGLY ball for any time...baby poop brown!  LOL

gtb, awkward urethane cover with rubber core. i bnought one NIB for my teammate last year since he LOVES that ball for fried lanes.

we always said gtb stood for "god throws brunswick" or "get ten ball".

Thanks guys.

It has yellow logos.  The guy I bought it from must have put a ton of games on it if it came out in 85.  I couldnt have bought it later than 86 and it looks like it had 10 years of use on it

I have a general question and to BrunsBob in particular.  Why don't bowlers like Del Ballard, Pete Weber and yourself, whose strong releases and relatively slower speed dominated the Urethane Era, return to using urethane equipment?  Is the disadvantage so great that they couldn't compete against the resin/particle bombs of today?  Are the cores THAT much stronger than were found in the stronger balls of the urethane era that the difference in carry is that much?  Are the lane conditions THAT much different?  There are a lot of days that I wish that I hadn't given away my Ultimate Weapon, especially when the gutter is open for business.  Can a Blue Hammer compete against the Infernos of today?

Only on a THS, and even then you better have a whole lot of hand.

The joke about the GTB on tour was that it stood for " GOOD TRY BRUNSWICK"
Great ball for drier conditions but when the cover wore it hooked dead early. Had 4 of them myself

The Edge was actually the first urethane from Brunswick.  Both Brunswick and Columbia had several flops in the urethane arena before they could come up with anything to match the angle or Hammer.

You mean the Grizz was a bad ball? Nick is gonna be sad....*runs and hides*
