I'd suggest going to all the manufacturer's web sites and digging around in the ball specs. I don't think Brunswick has anything but generic cores in their current 13lb ball lineup. For some reason, probably money, most ball makers tend to ignore the 13 lb market, which I think is a mistake.

according to brunswicks website there are four balls that use the same core in a 13lb. ball as the balls in the 14-16lb. ball range:

vapor zone
red zone
bvp rampage
bvp wizard

I don't think that's true anymore Greg. If you go to the "rg numbers for all weights" page on Brunswicks site, it shows all the cores and they are all generic for 13 and 12 lb balls. This doesn't mean they don't work well, they just don't have the hi-po cores.

In 12 and 13 lbs. the Brunswick generic core is far above what most manufacturers do.  The norm up until now has been to basically give the customer a three piece ball.  I've heard that there are a few companies that are getting smarter, but won't name them because I have yet to see them first hand.

Don't be afraid of 13# equipment just because the cores aren't the same.  Mike Wolfe shot 492 for two games and won with 13# equipment.  So I hear.

That thing about Wolfe saying something about a 13 lb ball was when he had the match won but his strike ball didn't come back. Someone told him to use his spare ball and that's when he said "it's only 13 lbs". Or at least that's the way I took it.

Hammer and Ebonite seem to have decent rg and differential numbers for their 13# equipment.

i'm only going by the picture of the core when looking at the particular ball. if you look at the core of the balls i listed the 13lb core is the same shape and design as the heavier balls. i realize their weight and density will be different. perhaps brunsbob or brunsricoh could elaborate for us.

Most Hammers I see on their site have the 13# balls with "significantly higher" RG diff. than the others. I suggest you e-mail them and ask about the core.

I emailed Hammer about this several months ago...
quote:
Sammy,

Hammer uses performance cores starting in 10#.  Although, the better performance specifications (RG and Differential) start at 12# with the Diesel core shape that is used in 12# and 13#.  The difference from one ball to the next in 12# or 13# will be the coverstock.

If I am not mistaken, all of MoRich's have non-generic cores in them.
