YOU Make The Call...
« on: September 06, 2005, 03:43:56 AM »
i have a dilemma,

im moving to a new league on thursday and debating on my benchmark ball.

the 3 balls i am bringing are the Inferno, Uranium and H2O.

ive narrowed the 1st ball out of the bag to the uranium pearl and inferno.
dry lane ball is the H2O

i botched a 300 with the inferno on saturday when my girl says "ut oh" in the 9th frame on my backswing thinking about a scheduling confict with our vacation.

anyway... the house we're moving to is synthetic.
they oil the lanes at 6PM, right before we bowl at 6:10PM
they are known for longer patterns and medium oil.

YOU MAKE THE CALL

Inferno(familiar ball)
or
Uranium Pearl(high scoring potential)?

layouts are located below in the sig links.

Since the Inferno and the Uranium have the same cover. Start with the Inferno because the Rg is a little higher and you're more familiar with it. If you need an earlier roll, move the the Uranium; more length, go to the H2O.

Well here are two generic answers.  Use the one you feel comfortable with OR practice with both balls then decide based on which one gives the better look.

Well, I would go with whichever hooks less outta the two. This way, you have a ball above and below what you start with. Hooking too much at the start of practice? Grab the H2O! Not hooking enough in practice? Grab the __________ (you fill in blank with whichever hooks more outta the Uranium and Inferno)! Now, another point to consider, is the fact that if you are very familiar with the Inferno, you'll be more capable of reading the shot with that ball, compared to something you're not fully used to the reaction it gives you. Just my little bit O' help...

my girlfriend throws a blazing inferno and a monster slayr.
granted... she doesnt have a lot of revs but..
it just seems like when she uses the slayr on a pattern where she should be using the blazing, the ball just hits the pins and deflects, rather than driving through it.

in my personal experience, i'd rather have it roll out than hit flat.

I concur with everything in this thread.  Go with lower rgs for heavier oil to ensure the ball will pick up.  I would personally rather have the solid than the pearl, but some surface prep and the inferno and pearl uranium should be different enough.  Whats with blaming your girl lon the botched trey.  Come on, seriously, its okay to be nervous

the only other time i was THAT close to getting my first 300 was bowling with my dad. (i was 19)

i had the front 9 and my dad approached me saying...

"you almost have a 300, dont screw up"
no smile or joking around, 100% straight faced, i ended up tugging it and left the 6-10.

so, it just happened all over again, we were the only ones in the alley, so her saying that was amplified about 100 times.

granted it all happened in practice, but a milestone is a milestone, you know?

300's dont really mean as much as they used to, im shooting for an 800, if i ever get that, ill die a happy bowler.

"To insert a question into your post:
When determining what ball to use on a lane condition, is it wise to throw a weak ball and move up? The reason being the weaker ball will store more energy than a strong ball and would get better carry as long as the speed and entry angle is sufficient.
If one starts with a strong ball, their line and carry may be sufficient, but far from the optimum. Some people throw "benchmark" balls to get a read of the condition. Which method is best? Does it depend on the bowler?"

Anyone to answer this interesting question?

OK, the question from Ta 152 and me was a bit out of topic,
I apologize, but could anyone nevertheless answer it,
it's interesting and I know that some users on this site

To me it really doesn't matter wheather one uses a ball that is agressive, or weak to begin to adjust to a lane condition.  It is much more important to know the ball inside and out.  Carry will come later as one sees the reaction more clearly, however if one doesn't know what a ball will do on many different conditions they may misread the condition.  Saying that a ball that goes long and stores up more energy will carry better is not always true as often times a ball can go too long and produce too much entry angle resulting in ringing tens and if weak, buckets and the likes.

A perfect benchmark ball for me is the zone classic.  It is easy through the heads, smooth in the midlane, with a nice, but controllable move in the backend.  I understand how the ball reacts for me on dry, on carrydown, on fresh backends, on heavy oil and can adjust from there.  This being said, sometimes, even though the classic will cover a variety of lane conditions it may be the wrong ball.  The lanes might be forcing the ball to roll out or to push too far down the lane.  If the ball is pushing I have the strike zone which has a similar breakpoint shape, but is earlier and stronger.  If the ball is reading too early, I have the sahara drilled to be late and smooth.

Start with a ball for medium that is readable and go from there.  Get to the pocket consistently and then fine tune ball reaction for optimum carry.
