New ad KILLING MY MACHINE!
« on: December 06, 2009, 03:49:32 AM »
I don''''t know what the problem is, but there is a new ad on the right make that LEFT sidebar that kills my machine when it pops up.

It just started today, and when it tries to load the page, the ad makes I.E. become unresponsive and has to be closed, then re-opened.

If this continues, I will cease to come here. Never had any problems before, and only have problems with this one ad. It has something to do with Tiger Woods ( saw his pic before my machine froze), but don''''t know anything more.

Just got my old machine out and tried it. Only ad that pops up on the sidebar with it is the VW ad, and no problems.

Wonder why my new one is having trouble and multiple ads come through on the sidebar, but my old one has no trouble and only one ad repeats?

if the ads appear to be out of place (like porn for example), it could be malware or a virus.

Download and install a host file like MVPS hosts... that should prevent your computer from loading a lot of ads.

No, not out of place, just takes a while to load (gives a "loading" message in the window, then freezes as soon as the picture starts to appear).
Don''t know why, but my old machine only loads the VW ad and no other, while my new one seems to rotate several different ones and freezes every time this one tries to load.

If I catch it in time (before it freezes), I can refresh the page and keep it from freezing up because it then loads a different ad.

I get nothing on the right side. I use I.E version 7.I get an Optimum/Ipod ad on the left.

I get a Tracking cookie from the DoubleClick server quite often here. My Anti-virus software shows it tome and I usually delete it.

I do get some delays once in a while downloading the ads, but nothing like you describe.

Again, I owe you. I have NO IDEA why I said "RIGHT" when I meant LEFT. The troublesome ad is one of the rotating ads in the bottom left corner of the page.

I will now edit my original post to reflect this ignorance.

Have you updated your adobe flash player recently? The ad below the menus on the left is a flash-based ad ...
Don't know if this helps or not.

Hadn't thought about that. I bought this NOS machine that has XP on it still, and I keep getting the message that it needs updates, just haven't done it because it was going to take a while.

Guess I'll do all my updating, then see what happens.

Sorry for the confusion about where the ad was. I was excited that the Redskins were winning and just got flustered I guess.

I use Mozilla Firefox. If you install the ad blocker, empty space is all you see bottom left.

I am using Firefox too and see no ads on the left side of this page.

The only ad I see is on the top of the page (Mutant Cell).

Just checked using IE v6.0 and no ads on the left side there either.  Like J Mac said, try using MVPS hosts file.  That may be the difference.

Firefox > Internet Explorer
Get FireFox, and install an add-on for Firefox called "Ad-Block Plus."  I have not seen a single ad on any website since I got it, and I absolutely love it that way.  Makes surfing the web much quicker.
