Beginning with a Scout?
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:34:58 AM »
Hey there, I just got into bowling and the other day i went down to my local pro-shop, i asked whats a good ball for beginners, and i looked around through some catologs, in the end i decided to get a Columbia 300 Scout (Reactive) Cherry Silver Pearl. The Scout is on its way to the shop as we speek but before i go in for measurements and drill i have a few questions. Should i get a slug put in? should i drill it fingertip? and should i put inserts in the tips? I am also trying to find out if i should buy my own pair of bowling shoes or use the house shoes.

Thanks

I think you should drill it fingertip and with a slug, inserts will be good for you, so you can learn to hook the ball.

If you are just starting out, and you wish to develop a hook, you should get it drilled fingertip grip with thumb slug and finger grips to start. It is very easy to switch out the finger grips to different ones till you find a type you like or prefer.  You should also invest in your own shoes, so you'll have the same slide each time you bowl. If you can, it will help you greatly to take a couple of lessons from a pro to learn how to read the reaction of the ball on the lanes and what you can do to get to the pocket for strikes and how to shoot spares.

Good luck ans enjoy your new sport.

The Scout reactive is an excellent ball for beginning to develop a hook type shot.  Small to medium but very controllable hook and will carry strikes on good shots.  It is definitly one of the balls I have reccommended to beginning bowlers in the leagues I have bowled in.

Absolutely fingertip.  If you're serious about learning to bowl, that's how you'll bowl for the rest of your life.  There's not much point in ordering a reactive ball if you're going to throw it conventionally and straight.  A White Dot, available in many attractive colors would be just fine for that.

I'd go with finger inserts at least.  Thumb could go either way.  I like a thumb insert, and I think that most people who have used them stick with them.  Definitely buy your own shoes.  If you bowl in a league, you'll pay for your own pair at least once over the course of the year.  Dexter makes some perfectly fine entry-level shoes for well under $50.

Edit: You might be able to get a deal from the pro shop for the ball, bag, and shoes as a package with a discount.  Many offer that sort of thing for beginners.

Entry-level balls are usually pretty mild and thus easy to control.  There aren't usually too many worries about it overhooking.  If you're very speed-dominant (few revs), you may find that you have a tough time getting the ball into a good roll (I do) but for most people it's not a problem.

Free or not, having your own shoes is way better than rental shoes.  I'm not sure how you're getting them free (maybe the league has a deal with the house), but at some point, you'll have to pay to rent them anyway.  See here.  I had a pair of Jason IIs for about three years and they're still in fine shape (do you wear size 10?).

Vdubs as far as the shoes go I would invest a little extra money into the kind that have a grippy sole on the non sliding foot. Like Dexter sst1s or linds classic. Many people develope bad habbits because thier non sliding foot slips when they go into the slide.

speaking from experience. your game will be much better with your own shoes. invest in some good ones because they'll last longer and give you better results. i tried the house shoes and got tired of constantly payin a dollar for shoes that i almost bust my head everytime i tried to slide.

Yes, a Columbia Scout is great to learn with and yes drill it fingertip.  As far as the other things, I think it is more of a personal preference.

Oh and yes buy your own shoes.
