Hyde cracking??
« on: June 29, 2003, 01:06:39 AM »
My friend got a hyde drilled up, and 2 weeks 10 games later, the bridge had cracked all the way to the pin. The ball was replaced by the pro shop and he had another drilled up. After 1 game, yes 1 game, the same exact cracking. The pin was thought to be too close to the fingers on the 1st ball, so it was moved on the 2nd and it still cracked. Anyone else having problems w/this ball?

Was the other precaution also taken: insuring at least 1/4" between the finger holes and their NOT meeting at the base/bottom of the hole? I've had a ton of Columbia Super-Flex balls; none ever cracked at this area.

Also I would make sure that the pro-shop is properly beveling the edges of the holes even if there are inserts in the ball. Many drillers forget to do this when they are putting inserts in.

My Icon2 bridge cracked while drilling!!!! (slightly more than 1/4" bridge width, and lateral pitches sufficient to keep the bridge thick). Amazing. This pro shop has drilled tons of stuff for me, and never had a problem with anything I brought in. We were both shocked. I'm not the only one who has problems with the Icon2 bridge cracking. I think that some combinations of coverstock materials are just more susceptible to cracking. My first WOW has circular hairline cracks around the finger holes, but this may be due to my keeping it in the truck for a couple of weeks during some hot weather. I won't make that mistake again.

I seriously think it was due to driller error. Just find it odd that it would happen twice on the same ball.

Might be a production lot with a particularly brittle coverstock formulation. Ask your driller if he reported it to Columbia or the distributor. Their reply might be interesting or a brush-off.

He took them both to columbia and both were replaced. They think the first one cracked because he hit the pin at the bottom of the ring finger hole. The second goes back tomorrow and they said they will know for sure after looking at that one.

gezz. Its definitely your ball driller. Most people that drill balls arent ibpsia approved. And thats when youll expierence this problem. I have never had a ball(all columbia by the way) crack from my pro shop driller. But other people around here have had ball cracking when they went to other pro shops that arent ibpsia approved. Dont bother with anyone that isnt ibpsia approved, your just wasting your money on an amateur ball driller.
