Sanding a scout reactive?
« on: January 14, 2007, 01:08:26 PM »
this is the situation, i have a 10 years old kid trying to learn the game. His bigger brother (12 yo) is using a seek and destroy and is hooking the ball around 5-7 boards. u guys know how kids mentallity is, no confidence and give up easily.
comming back to the 10 yo, luckyly lefty, hes trying to hook the ball, but there are limitations of what the scout reactive can do. Not only that, his older brother is bigger and stronger than him (at least wrist wise). with weak wrist, lefty (more fresh oil) his ball moves up at most 3-5 boards. Since he also wants to do what his brother does and not finding it, it may come to a point that he says "ok i have enough and quit bowling" something that we dont want. His father, a very good friend of mine, is thinking buying him another ball, but i suggested that we should try to sand the ball down to maybe... 400 or 500 grit with the sandpaper (so no more polish)

we were also considering buying him a glove to he can keep his wrist cupped (he cant hold it now)

should those changes make the ball move little bit more? hes lefty, theres no really need for him to hook the ball out of the house...

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

This guy on youtube posts videos of the PBA
for ppl who dont watch TV or want to save the matches this will be great!

What weight is he throwing?  Maybe he needs a lighter ball?

I know what you're dealing with, but you need to make sure you are encouraging the right mechanics and behavior - the game is so much more than hooking the ball!

How are the 2 as far as scoring, averages, spare shooting?  Maybe you can play the two "against" each other in those areas.....you know, maybe get the 10 year old to concentrate more on accuracy and shooting spares or something like that???

the kid is 10 yo, throwing a 10lb ball.

i ve tried to tell him, straighter is better, right now is to focus on the approach (something that hes very good at, way better and smoother than his brother). the thing is he has a strange personality. i ve been telling him that to learn how to hook the ball properly it took me and his dad lots of time and practice, that what is important is right now hitting the mark constantly, hitting the headpin in the first shot and try to make the spares.
but he gets very mad when he thinks it was a good shot and not getting strikes.

i try to encourage them as much as i can, but u know, they have a very fragile self confidence. today almost at the end of their league (3 games) he accepted to listen and play straight instead of trying to hook the ball, it came out pretty good, consistency on the headpin and getting spares. How long will it last for him to want to hook the ball again? well, we'll see...

this is the first time he bowls on a cosmic league (not a league that i would let them but it was the best schedule that suits them), averaging around 100 i would say.

the other thing is, if we ask he and his older brother to compete, one of them is going to get discouraged, so as of right now, we only want them to be consistent.
