It's basically Columbia 300's original ultra-hard or slicker polyester ball. It comes in one color, like a silver-white pearl and it's harder/lower friction polyester than a white dot.

I do see a lot of those, is it somehow better than other spare balls?  I am in the market for one!

Sort of, but it still comes down to the operator.

The older ones were significantly harder than most plastic spare balls of the time.  90+ on the D-scale.  Newer ones are not as hard, but still harder than many plastic balls (White Dots, Target Zones).  The additional hardness means less surface to grab the lane which means less friction generated and less hook potential.  How much less, or whether it was really effective with so little hook to start, I don't know.  They're usually slightly more expensive than most other plastic balls, but not as expensive as premium plastic balls like Vis-a-balls or the Spare Tire.

Had a friend (state record holder for doubles, as a matter of fact) and teammate who used to throw a blue dot.  No kidding, the guy could hook the lane with the thing with next to no effort.  Incredible.

Yup, once they were broken in and started hooking, no amount of polishing or resurfacing would bring them back to original. I know I tried and tried and tried and tried. You had to buy a new one and no they are no more ....

I actually saw Gillette's blue dot. Shame I couldn't throw it. I saw him throw it on video because my soon to be coach worked with Kevin and had that telecast he won. Jim Merril (sp?) is the coach I'll be working with who lives in Florence and worked with Kevin.
