1500 polished vs. 4000 abralon-what difference?
« on: March 04, 2007, 12:37:50 PM »
What is the different ball reaction of 1500 polished versus 4000 grit abralon surface.
I have a 1500 grit polished finish on my pearl thunderstruck;  Sometimes it starts up early in my leagues--old wooden lanes in one and not too much oil in my couples league although synthetic lane surface;

what happens if I ask the pro shop person to change it to 4000 abralon.
1)Does this add length or have little or no effect on length?
2)Does this smooth out the reaction or have little or no effect on reaction off the spot?

Thanks for any reply.

Normally, any non-polished surface should make the ball read the lane earlier than a polished surface. If you are looking for more length out of the Storm OOB ball, try a finer finish and hit it with polish.

4.000 Abralon is IMHO a great all-around surface for many balls, as a compromise between length and controllability. It will make the breakpoint easier to read, compared to a polsihed ball (even though this might also depend on lane condition and coverstock type).

Your objectives are a bit contradictive. You could - if you find them or a pro shop who still uses it - try a White Trizact surface on the ball. This is a VERY fine grit (10.000?) might yield some length AND control, but it without polish the coverstock could still read the lane quite early.
