4000 finish - Fury Pearl & Break Point
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:13:32 PM »
Both are finished at 4000 OOB, so how come my Break Point looks dull but the Fury Pearl looks shiny?

Thanks.

(One is supposed to be 4000 wet sand and the other 4000 Abralon... does that make a difference?)

The Breakpoint is a solid/pearl combo and the Fury Pearl is all pearl, as far as I know.

I just drilled a BP and it looked and felt very rough for a 4000 grit ball. I tried to use it on a Shark pattern, but it was too early for me. So I made sure it was at 4000 grit Abralon (P4000 grit). I sanded it with 2000 grit Abralon and then with a 4000 grit Abralon. It is still dull looking but the pearl part does look somewhat different fron the solid part.

You do have to be careful with 4000 grit pads since they wear away so quickly compared to rougher/duller grit levels. If you use it too much, it will put a light shine on the ball. That's a sure sign it's no longer at 4000 grit, but at some unknown smoother, finer grit level.

The Fury Pearl should still look dull but being all pearl, there can be a glimmer of shine here and there. And, once used, 4000 grit balls can pick up a lane/oil shine very quickly. They seem to need Clean and Dull or similar cleanigns more often than other grits and need surface refreshing more often than others also.

Hope some of that helps.

they are both said to be FINISHED at 4000 abralon.

what each company does before the 4000 pad is not something I know.

I agree with what charlest said.

also keep in mind that many companies start st around 500 abralon or less and then either go straight to 4000 grit OR step up to 4000 with each pad (500,1000,2000 -> 4000) by starting at a low grit the ball would appear much duller then if you were to just hit it with a 4000 pad after the ball had games on it. (it could actually appear polished especially if the pad is worn out like charlest said)

Thanks Charles & icewall.

I’ve only had about 5 games with my Break Point but the ball looks very promising.

When I first received my Break Point I thought it’s very rough. No bad thing though, as I intended to use it as my long/heavy pattern ball.
