900Global NEAT Pads
« on: January 03, 2012, 08:18:07 AM »
I was recently given a new "E" 1500 Grit pad to try out to contrast against Abralon. As a test, I applied the pad on my spinner to a 500 grit Lane#1 Maxx Curve. At 500 grit, the ball was burning up too quickly on my THS, and I needed to alter the surface anyway.

I used the 6-side method at about 20 seconds per side. I was very impressed with quality of the finish. The ball reacted very well when testing the cover on the lanes.

Initial Pros:

1)  Nice looking result. Very hard to see residual sanding lines at all.

2)  Thin easy to use pad.

Initial Cons:

1)  No foam backing like Abralon. NEAT has a thin felt backing, so the pad doesn't retain as much water when sanding.

2)  If you like sanding with CAB blocks, the combination doesn't work well. After 2 sides of CAB sanding, I ditched the CAB and applied by hand.

For me (initially), the pros out weight the cons, especially if the stuff last 3 times longer than Abralon. I'm going to get all the NEAT pads and experiment more, but I'm guessing now I'll convert when my current stash of Abralon wears out.

I'm curious if anyone has experimented with the new pads and what your thoughts are.

I bought a set about a month ago and since I dont really have much experience doing my stuff, I have found the neat pads do give a much better result. Cant see any lines, and what I have done so far seems to be working.

I took a ball that used to go really long due to the layout, I took it to 1500 and the ball on my ths 3rd game really showed what the pads are about. The ball really hooked on the back end where it never did this before.

I dont see any felt backing on my pads? I would say they are more like rubber and smaller than Abralon. I have found that when I am done doing a ball and rinse the pad with running water, its hard to tell if the pad is clean. I guess there is no build up like with other types of pads.

So far they are worth the money for me and I will keep trying new surfaces and see how it goes.

Steven,

I am beginning to suspect, from comments like yours, that the NEAT pads are based off the Trizact system. And they sound good so far.

But more pertinent to the question I have is -
Are they still worth it, compared to Siaair and Abralon pads, given that the price per NEAT pad seems to hover around $8.95 - $9.95 per pad (I have not heard of any volume discounts yet) ??

Most times Siaair and Abralon can be obtained for around $3.00 per pad in volume (20 per box, for Abralon).  My Trizact pads do far outlast both Siaair and Abralon.

I don't know about the comparison to Trizact, but it might very well be accurate. I still have some 35 micron 3M Trizact that I use to refresh my old SCB, so I'll do a comparison. It's been a while since I've used Trizact, but I remember it having more of a sandpaper like consistency. I could be very wrong on this. I'll check it out and report back.

I paid about $8.50 per pad, so they better outlast Abralon. I'm just getting started, so no history yet.

So are they 3x longer than abralon or siaair?  I'm guessing since Siaar is supposed to last 4x longer than abralon, they must be comparing to Siaair pads.  Siaair is the best bang for the buck at $2.60 -$3.00 per pad.  I guess if NEAT pads last 3x longer than Siaair, then they end up about the same exact price.  Abralon is just about extinct in the bowling world now...

I paid around $32 shipped for the 4 that come in a set. They are 750,1500,2500,4000 from N to T in that order.

Used my T 4000 about 3 times and cant see any wear yet and they dont look like they clog like abralon doesnt. I like how the ball looks after use, no lines.

I would never say that Siaair last 4x longer than Abralon. I have used both for quite a while now. If I had to estimate it, I'd say Siaair last maybe 50% to as much as 100% (2x) as long as Abralon with the majority of time 50% being the norm. That is my 2 cents.

Abralon is nowhere near extinct. Many, many people still use it. I got some at an incredible price and I will not throw it away. Siaair just lasts longer. Both do an equally excellent job. That is or will be NEAT's only advantage, in my opinion - lasting longer.

I ended up buying a set of all four NEAT pads. I've only made use of the 750 and 1500 grit pads so far, but I'm very impressed with the finish. Within the Abralon family, I'll probably only use the Abralon 360 grit pad for heavy duty resurfacing prior to switching to the 750 grit NEAT pad to finish out the process.

I just ordered all 4 of these pads but have a question about refinish time. 900 Global does not give specific directions on how long to use each pad to achieve the finish desired. I know Storm gives specific maintenance instructions when trying to recreate out of box finish using Abralon pads on a spinner. Anyone have experience with these pads and the required wet sanding time to achieve the desired finish?
