91% isopropyl alcohol
« on: November 28, 2013, 02:27:00 AM »
iv been doing my research on the cheapest cleaning product for my balls. I tried windex, simple green, dawn , superclean, 70% ipa and 91% ipa. of these products what worked the best for me was the 91% ipa followed by superclean simple green and dawn in that order. windex did next to nothing and 70% ipa was like water. the isopropyl 91% also happens to be the cheapest at around 2.50 per bottle. im going to do a test to see if it can dissolve lane conditioner which is mostly mineral oil per the msds, by adding mineral oil to cups filled with super clean, ipa 91%, and simple green.

Can wait to see the results. Take some pics or video as well.

will do , im also going to see if 50% ipa/50% simplegreen or superclean works better, if 33% water 33%water and 33% superclean/simple green is more effective at dissolving mineral oil. this test will be using 100% mineral oil which is harder to dissolve than lane oil

I know someone on here has posted several times before about their 3 in 1 mix using simple green that worked well.

yes but I want to see which one dissolves oil better and a test with 100% mineral oil is a good litmus

I recall a product that was marketed in a local pro shop and from what I understood it was just a mix of IPA and Simple Green. Just never knew what percentages he used. It was ABC approved (older product) and did a decent job.

If you plan to do this, be sure to mix in a well ventilated area...you never know what can happen if you breathe in fumes, not to mention the terrible smell of simple green sassafras.

What is superclean simple green? I know what simple green is, but never heard of superclean simple green.

Using too strong of chemicals will get your bowling balls clean, but can lead to weakening and damage to the cover material down the road. That is why products are developed from ball manufactures, so that they have the proper cleaning capabilities without doing too much harm to the cover stocks. I have seen very few cracked balls come into my shop, but of the ones that did, a high percentage of them were from either being left in the car during the winter, or from customers who made their own cleaning solutions using high percentages of alcohol and, or Acetone. In the long run, they end up spending more on "making" their own cleaner than if they just bought a bottle of Reacta-Clean.

I just use a rubbing alcohol and simple green mix. About 1/2 simple green and 1/2 alcohol gives a good deep clean. This is also my deep cleaning mix that I use once a month or so. My stuff I use after every set is 1/4 of this mix and 3/4 water. Enough to clean stuff off the surface, but not enough to be potentially harmful.

They are actually separate degreaser / cleaner products. Super Clean, is made by Castrol.
