about Hook Again and Resurfacing...
« on: January 31, 2004, 12:20:12 PM »
I've got a few misconceptions about resurfacing that I need cleared up if you will:

I've heard people say that it's not a great idea to use sandpaper on particle balls because it rounds off the little "points" of the particle's... and that it's best to use Scotchbrite pads on particle balls.

But when it comes to Resurfacing, don't you have to use Sandpaper on particles to be able to cut the ball down and remove the scratches, or can you do that with Scotchbrite pads?

If only Sandpaper will be strong enough to cut down the ball's surface to remove the track/scratches, then want you be killing the ball WHILE you are Resurfacing it with Sandpaper (because you'll be smoothing down the particle's, therefore, making them NOT sharp and then they won't be able to grip the lane)???

Some people recommend that you resurface a bowling ball before you put it in the "Hook Again"... but won't that HURT the ball, while the Hook Again is trying to HELP the ball?

Confused...

Ric,

Sandpaper kills particles.
Hook again takes the ball 4 feet up from the grave.
A little sandpaper + Hook Again makes your ball

Hope this helps

Brunswick particles: Trizact
Ebonite particles: Abralon
Everything else: Scotch Brite

I think there's a dark gray (don't feel like searching the many rehashes of this subject) that's 150 grit if you need it, then maroon (320) green (600) blue (800), white (1000?), light gray (1200-1500?).  Use the Scotch Brite pads for the entire resurface.

I've heard that some people use a quick shot of sandpaper at the end to rough the surface of the ball instead of the particles, but I never have.

Rick,

As someone already implied, different manufacturers use particles of different hardnesses. So, different types of abrasives are more appropriate for sanding or re-syrfacing different balls. Those particles balls made by Columbia have in the past been of the softer variety. When they were sanded by regular wet/dry (silicon carbide) sandpaper, they were made into the same surface as the resin base in which they were imbedded; in practical terms this virtually made the particle ball into a resin ball and its reaction was altered to a large degree, if not entirely.

Over time, manufacturers seem to have changed the nature of their partcles so that many of them (Columbia, Brunswick and Storm) recommend that you can use anythign now to change the surface (sanding or complete resurfacing). Ebonite has a special procedure of sanding, polishing, then sanding again in order to resurrect their particle balls PLUS the use of Hook Again.

So, the safest method is always the one recommended by the manufacturer, and to follow their advice.

Like many procedures in bowling, there seems to be no one set method to their madness.
