Elixir Over Or Under The Polish?
« on: October 30, 2003, 07:13:24 AM »
It seems that someone asked this question recently, but I don't recall ever seeing any replies although there could have been and I "missed them." Here are my two questions:

1. If you polish the ball, does it make any difference of whether Elixir is put on before or after the polish?

2. If it is supposed to be applied after the polish and not before,....why?

The reason I was asking this is because I have had instances where I put Elixir on my ball and then decided the ball needed some polish, so I put polish on over the Elixir. I didn't put more Elixir on because I had just put it on before the polish and only bowled maybe 2-3 games before adding the polish.

Bob, I thought about contacting Doc with these questions and I probably would have received a quicker answer, but posted it here as I felt there were probably others that might be interested in the answer(s) to my questions.

Hello Everyone.  Sorry for not replying earlier.  Was brewing up a halloween batch of Elixir.

Great question by the way and I have an answer for you.

Depending on what type of polish you use it can make a big difference.  As most polishes wear down the surface to shine up a ball they can actually strip off some of the Elixir thus making the cover stock spotty in some areas.  This can be noticed with some coverstocks more than others.  Since the Elixir does not change the overall physical make up of the balls surface i.e. dull or smooth.  It is best placed on last.

We have experimented with this and have found that most of the time people cannot tell the difference.  However there are times that it makes a significant difference and people tend to get a lot of weird squirty reactions.  Afer reversing the process it brought it back to normal.

I hope this answers the questions all.

Now back to the lab.

Thanks Doc. I had one instance where I meant to polish the ball, but put the Elixir on first by mistake, so I went ahead and followed it up with polish "by hand" (no ball spinner) over the Elixir. Unless it was me or the lane conditions that day, it seemed to make the ball (and it was an aggressive particle ball) go way longer with a weak break towards the pocket and also a weak hit. I came home, sanded the ball to take off both the polish and Elixir and then put polish "by hand again" on first this time and then Elixir last, and the ball worked normal.

Is this possible or was it just me or the lanes that day? I don't think that putting the polish on "by hand" wore down the surface did it?

Brickguy221 - I can't say one way or another aboout your findings because you did not bowl on the same condition on the same day....... you get the picture.  too many variables.

I think you were experiencing what I was talking about.  Some balls and some polishes can give you that over/under or black & white condition.  This is solved by applying the Elixir as the last stage.

If the bowlers out there are experiencing some over/under conditions this may be the reason.

Doc, I agree with you on all you just said. I know that I have never did that again and if I ever put the Elixir on first again, I will definitely sand it off before applying the polish.

Also, when ever I re-apply polish any more, I lightly sand the ball (note- I do have a spinner now) to take off any remaining Elixir. I then re-polish, then apply Elixir again. This may not be necessary, but is the way I do it.

Brickguy221 - You do not have to sand the ball down before repolishing and applying the Elixir.

You can just polish the  ball and apply a coat of the Elixir.  This will give  you a longer life to your cover.

Unless you bowl on a lane that cuts the ball like rolling it down the street, you shouldn't need to sand.
