How do YOU do the Hot Water bath?
« on: May 18, 2004, 03:15:19 PM »
Here's what I do:

I sand the ball down to 600 grit with Scotchbrite... then I use Track's Clean N' Dull to get a deep cleaning... then I put the ball in a bucket of really hot water and let it set for 30 minutes... then I take the ball out of the bucket and wash it off with Dawn real good and rinse the ball off under the faucet... then I empty the water out of the bucket and refill it with "fresh" really hot water and toss the ball back in the bucket and let it set for 1 hour... then I take the ball out of the bucket and wash it off with Dawn real good again and rinse the ball off under the faucet... then I use Track's Clean N' Dull again to just get off any excess junk off of the ball.

Is this process okay... or should I do something differently? How do ya'll do it?

I've heard that putting your ball in the oven can severely damage the coverstock, thus making the ball pretty much useless

that's because most of the people that do it do it improperly.  They think that if they put it one 300 degrees for 2 minutes is the same as 100 degrees for 10-15 minutes.  well they are wrong and found out the hard way.  Use the lowest setting on your oven and nothing happens to the balls.  I have done it with 7 bowling balls and they have all went back to their original performance.

I turn on the hot water in the bathtub, find a reasonable temperature, close the drain, fill the tub up most of the way, put usually 2 or 3 balls in at a time, let them sit for 15-20 minutes, take them out, wipe them down with a towel and simple green, re-heat the tub water, put them back in for another 15, clean them with the towel and simple green again. DONE!

The oven method does get more oil out of the ball than the dishwashing method does but if you are going to be a complete idiot and set it on 300 degrees then yeah it's going to melt.  If you are not sure about the oven method you can message me or try it with a bowling ball you don't use anymore and see if it has a difference....it won't hurt your wallet any cuz you don't use the ball right? exactly. just a thought....it works great for me, but i also use the dishwashing method when i don't have enough time to sit there and watch the bowling ball bake.

Oh i understand you're reasoning bob.  It is a good one too.  I would say most people should stay with the dishwasher method because they don't know much about the oven method, that's all i was stating.
