How do YOU do the Hot Water bath?
« on: May 18, 2004, 03:15:19 PM »
Here's what I do:

I sand the ball down to 600 grit with Scotchbrite... then I use Track's Clean N' Dull to get a deep cleaning... then I put the ball in a bucket of really hot water and let it set for 30 minutes... then I take the ball out of the bucket and wash it off with Dawn real good and rinse the ball off under the faucet... then I empty the water out of the bucket and refill it with "fresh" really hot water and toss the ball back in the bucket and let it set for 1 hour... then I take the ball out of the bucket and wash it off with Dawn real good again and rinse the ball off under the faucet... then I use Track's Clean N' Dull again to just get off any excess junk off of the ball.

Is this process okay... or should I do something differently? How do ya'll do it?

I think you are supposed to put the Dawn soap in the bucket with the hot water and soak it, where as you said you put ball in hot water, took ball out, and washed with Dawn soap. I haven't done this, only heard about it and I think this is what has been said. However I've never heard anyone say how much soap to use.

Ohhh... really? I thought you were just suppose to soak it in the Hot Water alone... maybe you are suppose to soak it in the Hot Water WITH the dishwashing soap too?

Anybody that's done this process know for sure?

Put BALL in bucket.  Put some DAWN in.  Add HOT water.  Let SOAK for 10 to 20 minutes.  Take ball OUT and WIPE off.  REPEAT.  RINSE.

Periodically I will add a bit of dishsoap and swish around in order to keep the soapiness up - I'm looking to figure out how to automate this the same way I do the water.

How do I do a hot water bath.  I fill up the tub with hot water and add the bath crystals.  Grab the wife and hop in.

She gets my balls really clean that way.

I take alcohol and a scotch brite pad to my ball, clean it up some.  Then, set it in the dishwasher for 10 minutes or so, dry it off, and then clean it good with windex.

I've run my equipment (ok, not the shoes) through the dishwasher with good results.  The dishwasher soap seems to work fine, but you MUST turn off the "Dry Heat" on the dishwasher or the extreme heat does bad things to the stuff holding the ball /core layers together.

Allow 24 hours to dry or the ball acts funny (don't mean ha ha).

Also, face the holes down...

I've actually done this and they are right about putting the dishsoap in with the hot water but one thing you have to do is to TAPE UP THE FINGER AND THUMB HOLES AND EXCESS HOLES IF ANY....otherwise your ball will become waterlogged just like a wet baseball and then might actually be over the 16 lb. mark and be an "illegal" ball.....

Another method is to throw it in the stove.  Put the ball on the pan in the oven on a very low setting about 100 or so degrees and let the ball set.  You can actually watch the oil come out of the ball then take it out, wipe it off with paper towels and then you can use any ball cleaner or alcohol that you wish.  Worked great when i did it.

Don't put paper towels in the oven.  Even at 80 degrees (I have never seen one with that low a setting.

tape w/water,i dont trust it....i found silly puddy works well(my roommate has a 5 pound hunk of it) leaves no residue on the ball and pops off the holes easily(after about 1 minute of cooling off time)...it wont take a direct blast of my lower dishwasher jets so i use it with the holes UP

I have used the hot water in a bucket or sink method and have heard good results with the dishwasher method (no heat cycle) but dont trust the oven method.  Here is a link to:
