Making a spinner
« on: June 11, 2006, 12:55:25 PM »
A friend of mine is going to make me a ball spinner for me as a wedding/ moving away gift.  He doesnt know what type of motor to get though.  Could someone who has made one or knows what to use please let me know.

Many people have all the parts around the garage or they can pick them up at a dump, so literally it could cost you as little as $10 or so in actual costs. When you factor in the labor though, it will obviously be a bit more (as it took a friend of mine 8 hours to make his). Depends on how much of a do it yourselfer you are whether you want to buy a spinner or make one.

Cost of mine was about £7 ($10). Everything else I either had or got for free.
A lot of thought went into it but I feel I have had 3 to 4 years of great use out of it up to now.
Dont just fly in and start without fully thinking it all through, that would be my only advice.
Great project for anyone who can do DIY.A tumble dryer motor worked best for me with its salvaged electrical on/off switch.
Only drawback is that its not transportable. Think of that if you travel to bowl in competitions.

My friend mentioned a washing machine motor.  I'll pass that and the tumble dryer motor ideas to him.  Transporting doesnt matter as I wont be taking it to competitions or anything like that.  Just looking for an easier way for me to change the surface of the bowling balls I have.  Thanks for the help everyone.

It's so not worth it IMO. You can buy them for $150.

Can't wait until the Darwin Awards feature some redneck that decided to build his own spinner...

a ball spinner is easy to build

to answer your question, a washing machine motor works the best, 110 volt, and two speeds

on a side note, even the "$150.00" ones look homemade

There's a significant difference between "homemade" and redneck tech...

You could try using an old lawn mower motor.  Has the advantage that it's gas powered and will work even when the electricity goes out.

I paid $200 shipped from buddies a couple years ago and I can say its the best $200 I've ever spent on bowling equipment. Why try to put a bunch of junk together and make a bootleg spinner? If you don't have $200 bucks to spend on bowling then just quit the sport now!

That last comment wasnt exactly necessary.  So if someone can make one for say $40 that doesnt happen to have the $200 at that time to spend then they should just quit.  So I guess the guys that still use older equipment yet still have the physical and mental game to shoot high scores with what they have should quit as well right?  I'm a college student therefor I dont have much money.  I'm sorry that I was able to get a washing machine motor, a couple pulleys, a power steering belt for $40, save $160 and have a spinner that works better than some that I have used in pro shops.  Not mad or anything, that money comment was not necessary.

There not as easy to make as you'd think. Sure you can get everything pretty cheap, but good luck not getting to shake. Because if it shakes hard enough it WILL throw the ball out off the cup, which hurts, I've had one fly outat me once.

Buddiesproshop has them for $200 with free shipping, save yourself the trouble and pick one up there.
