Turtle Wax... Red Compound & Green Polish ?
« on: September 09, 2006, 05:46:06 PM »
My local driller said that you can use these on your balls to alter the finish:

For a duller, more matte finish..Sheen if you will..
Red Rubbing Compound

...And as a polish, lighty gritty:
White Polishing Compound

I checked the Turtle Wax website and it doesnt say theres any wax or anything in them, their just compounds? They are pretty cheap at Wally World as well

Any thoughts ?

I have and used the Dupont equivalent of the red rubbing compound and, no, it doesn't have any wax in it. I doubt the polishing compound has any either. I've never used the polishing compound on a ball.

If they did, then auto paint shops would probably not use them, as I suspect the wax would prevent the paint from sticking to the metal properly.

FYI in the 1990s, Brunswick used to recommend rubbing compound as the way to get balls like the Danger Zone and the Speed Zone back to like-new, out of the box condition.

I've used them both and they work fine.  No wax in either.

I use 3M rubbing compound and 3M finesse-it.
Not cheap, but they do exactly what I need them to do.

Which of the car polishing substances DO have wax in them?  I'm thinking of trying such a polish on my plastic ball.

Just use a car wax, not a car polish.

I've used RainX on plastic. It makes the ball go straight.
There's disclaimer on the bottle that says it shouldn't be used on plastic unless pre-approved by the mfg.
I've never had a problem, and the ball goes pretty darn straight.

Knew a guy in New Jersey that used to put TURTLE WAX on his ball after he bowled with it. He would clean it and then put a coat of wax on it. The one ball I remember him doing it to every week was the DANGER ZONE. It seemed to work for his style of bowling. But when I tried it, the ball skidded too far and broke really weakly into the pocket, so I had no carry. After a few weeks, I stopped using it and had the surface of my ball brought back to OOB condition.

Reply from Shell Oil (makers of RainX) about use:

Dear Duke,

Thank you for your inquiry.

We do not recommend that you use Rain-X on a plastic coated bowling
ball. This product contains methyl alcohol which can compromise the
plastic.

Best Regards,
Technical Service

Remember that the ball has pores and that the car waxes will fill in the pores. Making the ball behave like a cheap plastic ball. The ball  will not grip the lanes after a treatment with car waxes that is why it will skid down the lane like a good plastic ball.

That is why when cars are wax they get a real smooth polish finish

You are correct but still it gets into the pores of the bowling ball and still think it will hurt the cover and action of a bowling ball in a bad way in the short and long run.

polishing  compound is not wax..

Just learning. Now I know a little bit more of what kind of polishing compounds I should use on my bowling balls. I thank you and appreciation your explanation. Where I have been? Here and never trying to be rude with anybody with concerns of what is use or has to be used.

quote:
Polishing compunds are frequently used to smooth out sanding lines on bowling balls and have been for years. Brunswick used Dupont Finess and Finess II to polishing there reactive ball until they developed their own polishing compunds..

Once you polish the ball to the finish you want, then you clean off the excess. Where have you been?
