Where to start?
« on: September 21, 2004, 04:27:38 AM »
I recently bought a Hammer Switch Blade, it hits like a tank but I'm having problem getting enough hook on it. This is my first reactive ball and expected it to move accross the lane a LOT more than it does.  Currently I'm standing center dot and throwing it up 2nd arrow and as long as I keep my speed down it will come to the pocket, but I expected a lot more snap out of this thing I don't want to have to worry about my speed all the time.  Suggestions on where to start? Keep in mind I only have 6 games on the ball so far.

Let me preface my response with two comments:
1) The amount of hook isn't important. You only need a small hook to generate enough entry angle to carry.
2) The Hammer Switch Blade isn't a big hooking ball.

Where do you want the ball to hook?

If you are looking for an earlier hook and bigger overall move (or the same move at a higher ball speed), then get the ball dulled.

If you are looking for more backend snap (but you'll likely cover fewer overall boards), then get the ball polished.

You can always have the coverstock restored back if you don't like the change.

Thanks for the advice.. after reading up a little bit about surface friction and using the Surface Friction calculator on ebonites website I determined I need to sand my ball down using a 1000 grit Abralon pad.  Anyone know where I can get one of these?  I would assume my local pro shop but I have a hard time getting there before they close, anywhere else I can find Abralon pads?

If it hits like a tank, why worry about more hook.  Less hook makes it more controllable, meaning you'll hit the pocket more often, and hitting like a tank implies good carry.  Leave well enough alone.  --  JohnP

Right now I'm throwing stright up and it's coming into the pocket, and i'm having to slow down a LOT more than normal.  If I throw at my usual speed it won't move but a few boards.  So basically I want to get the polish off so I can put some more speed on it, I'll be more consistant if I don't have to worry about slowing down.  Although I did throw a 219 with it my 3rd game... I think there's a lot more potential in the ball.

Pin action is incrediable...., but I'm upgrading from very very old technology.

Aparently ScotchBrite pads are the same as Abralon?  GREAT!

Hey RX7 Lover, jsut wanted to hijack here and mention that I'm also a rotary fan. I have an 1985 (1st Gen) GSL-SE witrh the 13B. I also have an RX8 on order...

Anyhow, the switch blade isn't the biggest hooking ball in the world (it's on the lower end of average).

If you want to try scotch brite pads, hit the auto parts store. I got a number of grits at a NAPA store, including maroon (320g), grey and white (800 and 1200 I believe, off the top of my head).

Good luck... and zoom zoom!

OH!  What I wouldn't give for an Rx8!

Thanks for the tip.., I actually found out about scotchbrite pads after doing some research.  Agreed the switch blade is not a huge hooking ball, but why would it come polished then?  Seems strange to me.  So anyways, I used the green pads (600 grit) and sanded it down.  It basically just took all the polish off and now it hooks like a champ!  Great back end snap too, I am very pleased.

Have fun with your new ride!

It's designed to be a low hooking balls for those drier lane conditions....the pearl gives it the extra length in the basence of oil.
