Who has balls with a 2000 grit or finer finish and ...
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:05:04 PM »
How often do you find you need to touch up the coverstock?

I intend to try it in the near future and wonder.

I have a urethane I use for spares that I finished to 1500 grit. Even though I wipe off the ball religiously AND urethane absorbs oil 20 times slower than resin, I find I need to touch up the ball every 2 months or so. Remembering that this is ONLY my spare ball PLUS it is plain urethane, that seems quite often, to me.

I almost dread trying to keep a ball at 2000 or 4000 grit.

On the subject of the price of abralon pads -
Got some inexpensive abralon pad boxes, but not in that precious 4000 grit size. Toolpeddler won't discount box purchases of 20 or more. The price is the same whether you buy one or 20. Darn. People on EBay don't sell the 4000s anymore.

Jeff--I use a Col. Blue Dot for a spare ball 4000 abralon with Delayed Reaction polish over top.  I haven't touched it in two months but if I was going to a tourney where I knew backends were touchy I'd go over it with more polish.

My Track Dry Heat I keep at 4000 abralon.  I don't use it much so can't say what it will do over time.

In a related same type of issue which you may be able to address...I am seeing some of my equipment after a initial surface touch up with abralon that it may pick up a shine just from use during  a league session that I don't expect.  These are newer balls.  I do use Doc's Elixr and know this will cause a bit of shine but not much.  Any ideas?

Funny, that is exactly what happened to my urethane, a Columbia Trooper: it got shinier and shinier. Also happened to my Kong, which was supposed to be at 800, but I used that as a strike ball, and being resin (base), it was expected.

I don't think the shine is anyway related to the use of Abralon or of Doc's mixture. The only relationship I see is that it's (usually) a very fine grit. Most Abralon used is 1000, 2000 or 4000 grit. The finer grit will be "polished" more easily by the roughness of wood AND synthetic lane surfaces as it revs up and rolls down that 60 feet of friction. That's my best guess. There may be too many variables here to correctly assess them all.

I think we just have to watch carefully and touch up when the ball either looks "wrong" or it acts unexpectedly.

FYI I was thinking about these fine finishes and Doc's Elixer (as he spells it). maybe using Doc's will make you able to use the 2000 grit instead of needing to go to 4000 grit?

That maybe true.

jensminger says he uses abralon pretty much exclusively as he gets a better "true" reaction. I'd take my DT Thing to 1000 grey pad scotchbrite no Doc's Elixir as it is soaker.  Even my Thing would pick up a shine in short time.  By "shine", I mean not polished or glistening just a sheenish shine.  It does effect lane reaction.

Another instance, I use a Legends Big Kahuna 75 deg. layout stacked leverage a strong drilling.  I find it best for medium-heavy first game to two games at 1000 abralon.  When fresh this ball kills.  If, I don't tweak surface before every use ball reaction is changed.  This is why I ask if you are seeing same kind of thing Jeff?  Maybe I just need to tweak before every use which is no big deal but wonder if others see this also.

Scott, I see this on 2000 or higher, but I think it is more belt related than lane related polish.

I have a Power Groove I use for spares. I took it to 4000, used Diamond Gloss on it and I haven't had to do anything but wipe it off, yet, again, spares only, but it's been 3 months. It still looks like I just finished it.

Hope that helped in some way.

You guys must be bowling on nice lanes or throw alot of strikes.  I usually have to keep the polish up on my spare ball at least twice a month.

charlest, I bought my pads from toolpeddler a while back, but only a couple of each. Have you tried anyone else for a lower bulk price? The following has or had cheaper individual prices than toolpeddlers.
