2 CG placement questions (not the usual)...
« on: January 25, 2008, 03:45:20 AM »
This isn't about CG maddah/nomaddah...

On a ball (particularly a short-pin ball, but any ball I guess), does it matter if the CG winds up above the fingers completely?

Let's say I've got a ball with a half-inch pin and I want to put the pin 1 inch above the bridge. That's going to put the CG a half-inch above.

Does this matter, so long as the statics weigh out properly?

Conversely, does it matter to have CG and pin both below the thumb? On some of the more exotic layouts out there (pin under thumb), let's say you put the pin 1 inch under the thumb, and the CG ends up a half-inch below. As long as statics weigh out, are you good to go?

unless top is very low and fingers are drill really deep-and thumb shallow

probably wont come out statically legal

As long as the statics are legal, it doesn't matter, but if the TW is over about 1 1/2 oz you'll have to drill the finger holes extra deep and/or use a balance hole in the finger positive quadrant.

Again, a balance hole will probably be required - this time in the thumb positive quadrant.  But with the pin in this position, the track flare will be reversed and you may hit holes.  Proper location of the balance hole will raise the bowtie, but I would hesitate to use this layout for a high 3/4 tracker unless he doesn't mind the ball thumping its way down the lane.  --  JohnP

Regarding the question about the thumb, I'm interested in trying a Girard-style layout. I'm a mid-tracker and was wondering if I could get away with that drilling or something like it.

I'm not a ball driller, but do know about layouts/weights, etc. To eliminate complications & undesirable ball reactions, I would suggest getting at least a 4" pin out to attempt this drilling. I have one with this drilling, & the pin out is 4 1/2". I believe a 4 1/2 or 5" pin out is recommended.

On your Girard ball, where exactly is your CG and pin located, and do you have a weight hole anywhere? Thanks!
