Balance hole question
« on: August 13, 2003, 06:56:27 AM »
currently have a rotogrip pure fuel.
drilled pin 4 1/2 to pap under finger hole.
and MB on VAL..

ended with 7/8oz thumb and 7/8 side weight...

where should i put the weight hole if i want the ball to rev up more in the mid lane without losing power in the backend ?

and also the size and depth..

thanks .

I'm going to take the lazy way out because I think these tips are so good to read:

http://www.ebonite.com/techcenter/balanceholes.php

and

I think your goals of revving up more in the midlane without losing power in the backend might be somewhat mutually exclusive.  There are people on the board with a lot more experience with drilling than I have who will hopefully jump in and help.  Hopefully Constantine will reply.

You should provide a little info about your game, though.

Nevermind that last sentence.  I see you have some info in your profile.

Chun, what is the top weight left in the ball. Top weight makes a big difference. =:^D

chun, depending on how much top weight is in the ball now, will determine where you want to put the hole. Does this ball go too long in it's current state..? =:^D

While I'm sure T-god's answer will be more precise, since he puts more emphasis on static weights than I do, but I'll give it a shot.

You want more roll without losing backend.  That's tough because adding roll generally reduces the amount of backend.  The answer I think would be to add flare.

To add flare you need an weighthole off-axis to create additional instability.  Unless you are already getting the full 7" of flare from the Pure Fuel, I'd draw a line from pin through your PAP and put the hole on that line 2.5" outside your VAL.  I'd start with 3/4" bit drilled 2" deep.  You can then go wide & deeper later if its not enough change.

Whadda think T-g?
Good luck & good bowling

Constantine, I would tend to agree with your reply. I'm guesstimating he doesn't have much, if any top weight left in the ball. With your hole placement recommendation, the decrease in side weight, coupled with a slight increase in top weight, will get you closer to a 3 to 2 ratio top to side weight. This puts the ending CG/heavy spot close to the leverage position, which increase flare and improving your midlane and backend reaction.

What I'd be concerned with is if you kept going bigger and deeper with the hole. This will now take out all the side weight, even going to negative side, and pushes the ending heavy spot/CG towards your track. With the ending CG in/close to your track, the ball will start to react like having your pin in your track, thus decreasing your ball reaction.

You can't just keep drilling bigger and deeper, and expect the reaction to keep getting stronger.

What do you think Const..? =:^D

Still don't buy into the 3 to 2 ratio static weight stuff, but I definately agree that there is a point of diminishing returns on the weighthole size.

Const, if you learned more about the ending CG and how and where it moves to using weight holes, you will "UNDERSTAND" why there are diminishing returns with respect to the weighthole size. Then, you will realize how the 3 to 2 ratio works, as well as how to use static weights to your advantage. =:^D

Unless the pin is below the midline, a line from your pin through your PAP should end up in the lower right quad, not the upper.
