While I was learning, I was taught fingers first, in the instance that you miss the line, you could still adjust the thumb accordingly and only affect the pitches by 1/32nd or 64th or so.  After I got good, it doesn't really matter, I'll still usually do the fingers first out of habit.

To go a step farther...
When plugging to adjust span, do you plug the fingers or the thumb?

Always thumb first.

When plugging it depends on many conditions. How much the span needs to be changed. Where the Pin, CG and MB are in location to the fingers/thumb. Usually its the fingers that get changed because we dont habe to charge again for a slug.

I do fingers first, re-measure to double check, then pop the thumb, just how I do it.

As far as span change, depends on pin location. If the fingers are right for the individual, I'll do thumb, again, depends on what/how much has to be done.

I just realized that it does not matter which is drilled first. I like thumb first because then u can map up to get the fingers correct. Then again you can always miss the lines and screw it up. But drilling fingers first, then remapinf got the thumb isnt any better, because you could totally miss the thumb line as well.

WHo cares how a ball is drilled as long as it is done correctly and fits well. Not to hijack the thread or something...just wanted to state this.

I have tried both ways and thumb first just seems to be the most accurate of the two. The reason I say this is because if you customize the thumb to fit just right you have some varations from the total span if you have to alter the front of the thumb hole. If you don't need to adjust the thumb it really doesn't matter.

For the reasons stated above.

Fingers first, re-measure, then thumb.

Definitely fingers first.....I use a Jayhawk Pro jig ( cradle type), so once in place you never remove the ball till done. So even though I measure the thickness of each grip type with calipers ( made a chart with all sizes, including lady size) and layout ball with these lip to edge of hole included, I always punch the finger holes, slip the finger grips into holes while still in the jig, then remeasure span to thumb for each finger to verify before doing thumb. Even if I hit the lines, which I do, some angles such as 1/2 reverse seem to affect overall spans, as well as some grip styles such as semi finger with the raised portion down in a ways, will vary the span slightly. Just want to be as exact as I can. If off , then I restrike a center line (that's why I still use a pencil) to move thumb accordingly to correct if off any.
That's my process, time consuming, but I feel I get paid for quality not speed.     Al
