RH bowler:left versus right thumb pitch?
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:21:17 AM »
For a right-handed bowler, what is the difference or the purpose of left lateral pitch on the thumbversus right lateral pitch on the thumb?

Thanks for any replies. I'm trying to learn.

the lateral pitches is how the thumb exits in rotation. Forward and reverse dictates the timing of the exit of the thumb on the down swing.

So for a right handed bowler, having a lateral left pitch will exit quicker than a right lateral pitch, meaning you will go around the ball less with left pitch. Right pitch, more around the ball.

I'm not a guru, so others can better explain it..

Lateral thumb pitches should be based on how the thumb naturally bends.  --  JohnP

LEft and right lateral never made sense... Which = away and which equals under?

Lefty50,

For me it makes sense.  Away means away from the palm/laterally out, under means under the palm/laterally in.

The old coke bottle test was the best way to find ones lateral thumb anatomy.

New drillers say bah humbug I hear and drill for the roll they want.  I don't know how because I have a thumb that wants to go to my ring finger in the coke bottle test.

Any thing 1/8 or less under palm(Left for this lefty), leads to the Bill Taylor predicted double hang for me.  One on the corner of my thumbnail down in the ball and one that rubs on the top side of the thumb on the other side!  A big decrease in revs results, (FOR ME).

I tell my friends you want the ball coming off like butter.  So smooth people think you are a no thumber some days!  Or another look at it..."get your pickle(thumb) in that barrel(thumbhole), good and straight!

I've had acquaintances increase their bowling by going more under palm(while increasing reverse), and also had good luck with bowlers going lateral out(fewer), while decreasing reverse if their coke bottle test was near their index finger(out) while their barrel(thumbhole) was set up for a person with a coke bottle test near the ring finger.  The old double pickle rub in the old barrel(thumbhole).

I still don't know how the new drillers take a thumb under anatomy and put it lateral out and get good results.  I have seen a friend do it who was near 230, on a house shot and then go dramatically out with his thumb pitch for a more behind roll to improve sport results. He is now an elegant 212 house shot average and an elegant 196 sport shot average, maybe a slight increase on the tougher shot!

Thanks in advance for  updates on adjustment methods from one's predominate anatomy.

I have 1/8 away in my thumb and 1/8 forward. Never really understood the coke bottle test, when we don't hold the ball like a coke can or bottle.  but when I had reverse and zero in my thumb it was okay but I wasn't releasing it cleanly. When I went right lateral it got worse. just putting my hand in with more reverse and right lateral, my thumb felt trapped.

it's easy for me to move my thumb away from my palm.  it feels stiffer and I feel more tension in my forearm when I move my thumb medial, or in bowling terms towards the palm.

These was done 10 year or so ago... again, i'm not a guru guy, just joe bowler... but all this 1/8 here more revs, 1/8 there decrease revs.. and all that jazz..... is too much for me. that's why never wanted to work and learn the ropes when I was asked and had the chance to 15 years plus years ago.

Depends on whether you're right handed or left handed, that's why "left" and "right" are more accurate.  To visualize, think of looking down on a ball with the holes up and thumb closest to you, fingers away.  If the hole slants to the left, that's left pitch; if to the right, that's right pitch.  The same applies to both finger and thumb holes.  --  JohnP

John, that is the secret, thanks. I should have realized that thumb pitches would laterally be described the same as finger pitches. The trick for me was envisioning with holes down since left equals right and right equals left if you are holding the ball in your hand. That's why I always use away and under because the orientation is the same no matter which way you are holding the ball. As a final test, for myself as a left-hander, looking down on the ball, right pitch would = away for me, and left pitch would = under. Following thru on this, for a left hander, right/away pitch exits sooner and left/under exits later. But... Isn't that the same description we give to forward/reverse? One more summary please about exit rotation around the ball (I think that's best description for L/R) vs exit point in the release (best description for forward/reverse)... That should cement the thought....

Thanks

You've got the directions correct.  Lateral thumb pitch should be selected based on the hinge angle of the thumb, which is what the "Coke bottle" test is trying to find.  This avoids creating blisters and other thumb problems.  That being said, for a left hander extra left pitch beyond what is needed does hinder the thumb release and extra right helps the thumb release earlier.  Base line forward/reverse pitch is determined from the thumb angle pitch chart (see link below).  Then after drilling further adjustments are made to fine tune the release.  --  JohnP
