Dual angle question
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:06:21 AM »
I was laying out some equiptment i just bought and noticed that all of the dual angle set ups i used ended up with the pin above the fingers. The only way i coulg get a pin down was with a large (70 degree) VAL angle, and a small drill angle(less than 40). My pap is 5 over and a 1/2 up. Am i doin something wrong?? The angle set ups didnt seem that outrageous. Here are some examples 35x4.5x30, 80x3x40, 55x3.75x25. This is the first time Ive tried the tecnique, so i really dont know what the final product looks like. thank you!!

the pin placement has to do with the val angle. the mass bias has to do with the drilling angle. If you notice the angles to the val of your first drilling and your third drilling are within 5 degrees and pin distances of less than an inch. the middle one has more of a pin buffer (from your val line)but it has a shorter pin so all in all they should be in a very similar location. If you check the mass bias, I bet the 2nd drilling has the mass bias close to the thumb if not in it or left of it. I bet the 3rd drilling is to the right of you thumb hole and the first drilling probably has the mass bias past the val line. You probably did it right.

I agree with elg.  My PAP is 5 3/4 and 3/4.  The only time my pins will be below the fingers is if I go with a minimum of a 65* VAL drilling.

Now, you may be able to still go pin down if you use a shorter Pin-pap distance, but you run the risk of putting the core in a more unstable position(unless that is what you are looking for).

Thanks guys for the help. I found out that to get the pin below, the val angle has to be greater than 55*. Thanks again fellas!!!
