finger pitches???

what is a normal pitch for the fingers?  I don't have any forward or reverse but what would be typical side for the middle and ring fingers?  any ideas, a driller asked me this and I dont know my specs.  Almost all righty balls I pickup feel pretty similar to mine.  help, thanks

dstanek -- Forward/reverse pitch is dependent on the flexibility of your finger joints.  I very rarely pitch fingers forward, but have used up to 3/4" reverse for a very inflexible joint (my own ring finger).  Side pitches are more a matter of comfort, so long as the driller is careful to not allow the bottom of the finger holes to come together.  I usually use the Bill Taylor recommendation of 1/4" left for the middle finger and 5/8" right for the ring finger (for right handers).  --  JohnP

John, is this 1/4 & 5/8 lateral finger pitch thing sort of a begining point and then adjust from there? Reason I ask is where I live it seems most are either 1/4 & 1/2...or...3/8 & 3/8...unless the bowler specifies different.

I was taught 1/4 left on the middle finger and 1/2 right on the ring finger,if inserts are used. It is 1/8 left on the middle finger without inserts.It can vary to accomodate strange bends and inflexibilitys in the fingers and joints.Also these are for fingertip,I use 3/8 left and 3/8 right for most conventionals.

dstanek -- The 1/4 left and 5/8 right are Bill Taylor's recommendations from his Fitting and Drilling handbook.  I think he also says they can be adjusted if problems arise -- sore spots, calouses, etc.  He does also make the statement that lateral finger pitches are primarily for comfort, not for enhancing the ball release or performance.  --  John P

Just have in front of me my Bill Taylor fitting and drilling a bowling ball.

Maybe I have an earlier edition.  Pre finger inserts.

He states 0 middle and 5/8 right ring for fingertip grips.
For conventional 1/8 left middle and 5/8 right for ring.

I know many people changed this once inserts came out!

Funny for me I get all sorts of side rubbing if I follow the above prescription.

It seems to me that all these pitches are based on some assumed spacing between the fingerholes (5/8 - 3/4) and trying to keep the finger tips parallel. My fingers sure don't look parallel.  Inserts require that the fingers be slightly further apart.  What is the current standard spacing?  What effect does moving the fingers apart have?  I look at my grip sometimes and wonder what would happen if I moved them far enough apart that I could go 0 left-right pitch on both.  Sure would make the inserts fit in the ball better.

LuckyLefty -- I think the answer to your rubbing problem lies in your name.  For lefties, the side pitches would be reversed -- still 0 (or 1/4 right) for the middle finger and 5/8 left for the ring finger.  --  JohnP

PS tried it and it does not work the 0 middle and 5/8 ring that is.

PPS I have not tried 1/4 middle and 5/8 ring.  Your varient on the Bill Taylor pitches.  Could be an experiment.

I kept getting callouses on one side of my fingers next to finger nails and if I bowled say like 8-10 games, my fingers would be so sore the next day that I could hardley put then in the ball. I was 3/8 left on middle finger and 3/8 right on ring finger. LuckyLefty told me to move the lateral pitch in the direction of the callous. So, I started moving 1/16 at a time on both fingers and ended up with 1/8 left on middle finger and 1/2 right on ring finger. Today I have no problems at all with the middle finger and almost none on the ring finger. It is so miminal that it doesn't really bother me any more. I've thought about moving ring finger 5/8 right, but for whatever reason have been reluctant to do so thinking that would be too much as well as unheard of.
