Flaring over the thumb hole....
« on: February 23, 2009, 01:53:31 PM »
How do I stop my ball from flaring over the thumb hole?  My first ring on every ball is really close to the thumb and on some it clips the thumb.  I threw my Motiv tonight and it was flaring like crazy but the first ring was way over the thumb hole.

Any help appreciated.

Need your specs and the ball layout first.

Tracking over the thumb has to do with too little ball tilt.  At least that's what i'm finding out.  I clip the thumb with my first flare ring everytime I release the ball.  I've tried many different hand positions and still clip the thumb.  The only time I don't clip the thumb is when I break my wrist back and spin the ball which I hate doing because it creates an unpredictable ball roll and too much hook.

I plan on taken one of my bowling balls and having the pro shop guy drill the finger pitches even more reverse than I have them now.  I'm hoping it will allow the ball to get off my fingers quicker and thus pulling the track off my thumb.

i've heard that the pressure of your middle finger will help get more tilt and a little higher axis point (thus causing your track to be lower and away from your grip). not sure if this is accurate but it could be something to try.
good luck

I will give it a try.  If I could move the track flare 1/2" lower I would be happy.  That would be enough to clear the thumb.

I figured out that flaring over the thumb is mostly caused by having very little ball tilt.  It's very hard to find info on how to increase ball tilt.  I searched the net time and time again and their's not much info about changing ball tilt.

I've come to the conclusion that the reason I track over my thumb is because my fingers are staying in the ball too long after clearing the thumb causing very little ball tilt.

I have a stretched span (not sure of the specs).  I do know my finger pitches are 1/4 reverse. I'm taking one of my bowling ball into the pro shop this week to have the finger pitches changed to 1/2" reverse.  I'm hoping this will allow the ball to come off my fingers quicker and increase ball tilt.  I will let you know if it works.

I'm positive the reason i'm clipping the thumb is because of very little ball tilt.

I hope this info helps you out because it may be the reason your clipping the thumb.

I have very little axis tilt being a former full roller.  What helped me get my first ring away from the thumb was some pitch and span changes.  On my middle finger I added 1/8 forward and 1/8 left and decreased the span by 1/16. On the ring finger I added 1/8 reverse and 1/8 left and increased the span 1/16. On the thumb I added 1/8 left.  This moved my first ring about 1/2" away from the thumb.  I hopw this helps.

Shortening my span brought my track off my thumb about an inch.  I still track over my thumb on old equipment with a stretched span, and my spare (which is still at my old span).  I don't know how much shorter my span is, but it went from moderately stretched, to relaxed, maybe 1/4"-3/8"?

would a full roller layout bring the track off the thumb?

No, it would continue to flare over the thumb hole and continue counterclockwise (for a righty) between thumb and finger holes.

Afraid I lean towards what several have said already: it's probably a combination of your release and where the pin is. I suppose there's a remote possibility of a mismarked CG.

How is the Motiv drilled and which one is it?

(No reply to any of these attempts to help since Feb 23rd??? Are you ill, Spider Ball Bowler?)

If you have access to a wrist support - borrow it. You may find that changing your wrist angle rather than had position will drastically change your track. I do agree you are probably staying behind the ball too long. You will see the pros break their wrist to throw at the ten pin and go over the thumb hole all match.

Hi Pat in Rio Rancho I don't think our teams have bowled against each other yet. That's what happens in 36 team leagues.
