Full Roller Layout For 3/4 Roller in Oil?
« on: September 20, 2008, 08:01:41 AM »
I was looking over some of the posts in another forum and it prompted me to think about this....

Since a full roller drilling (pin at 7:30 to the grip center or there abouts) typically makes the ball go early and thus hook a fair amount, would this be anoption for someone bowling on an overly slick lane condition?

I am thinking either a heavy house shot on wood or perhaps a heavier than average oil pattern on synthetics?

Our house shot is playing differently this season due to how the lanes were prepped before the finish was applied this summer. Many of us are having a difficult time getting a consistent midlane read and are having a lot of over/under on the backend.

The guys who are scoring are playing the typical full roller line...slower speed, not a lot of side turn with lower axis tilt.

I was just curious what your thoughts were on this topic.

A 3/4 roller throwing a full roller layout will flare into the holes.  Thump, thump, thump, . . . . .  --  JohnP

Not always true.  To be very honest I shot the highest series of my life with a ball drilled with a full roller layout, and yes I am very much a 3/4 roller.  Doug, personally I would have no fear of trying this.

Thanks guys...like I said just thinking about trying to get a ball that will be a bit more controlled and not shoot left like a missile on the last 15 feet.

Doug, I have used full roller layouts for years. I also use 90 degree axis rotation. When I put the pin 3&3/8 to grip center it usually hooks too much for my liking so I usually put the pin 2" to grip center. This is a very effective drill to use on slick conditions especially with an aggressive solid or particle.Beware though it will hook a ton with the 90 degree release.
