going to forward thumb pitch
« on: January 25, 2009, 12:17:48 PM »
what should i expect
both good and bad

i really try to keep my hand as relaxed as possible, but with the reverse i now have im still having to squeeze the ball, not allowing me a clean release

all im after is a clean release
any other input will go into the hard drive

thanks

With forward, I've had problems with tearing my thumb at the base, near where my thumb runs into my palm.

You might try a little bit of left pitch rather than forward. This will let you stay in the ball a little longer with fewer problems (in my experience).

It may take a combination of left and forward pitches, but I wouldn't push my pitch too far forward. If you're at an eighth reverse, don't jump to like, a quarter forward. That's ridiculous.

I'd go an eighth forward from whatever you have to start, then go a 16th left until it feels right. Just my two cents...

Went from 1/8 reverse to 1/8 forward in one jump, kept the left lateral at 1/8 shortened the ring finger a 1/16 th to compensate for the change.

At first it will be harder to come around the ball, it takes 2-3 weeks to pickup the feel all the way. If you like play more direct it is great change if your hand allows it, if you like a swing game try something else wrong move imo.

mp span is over 5 inches, and i've always been a little speed dominate, but im @ 3/8's reverse, and as much as i try to relax the hand im still having to squeeze it

as it is i still get decent revs 350 +/-, but im having to work too hard to get there, and its tearing up my elbow.

i actually reduced my span by about 1/2 an inch when i was having elbow trouble before.

oh and im currently @ 1/8 lateral right just based solely on the pro shops recommendation at the time, and i have gotten used to it. Although it may be time to revisit that also

I'd say try going 1/8th or 1/16th right, 1/8th Reverse on your first ball....Meaning leave the right alone or move it 1/16th back towards 0, and come 1/4th towards 0, not add 1/8th to the right or 1/8th Reverse.

If that's not enough, I'd go to a 0 pitch altogether.

Yep....you are on the right track...if 3/8 reverse go to 1/4 reverse or 3/16.

To avoid rockbowlers problem probably a little more front bevel will be needed but do the Mo Pinel bevel technique adding a touch (after testing) to the front of the thumbhole under the flat of the thumb.

I'd stay with your 1/8 lateral right if that is what your Pro shop recommended.

Should've mentioned that. I do bevel the thumbhole a bit more than most and I put a piece of hada patch at the base of my thumb now, as well as the fact that I now have an 8th or more reverse pitch.

Maybe your span is still a little too long.

Still having to squeeze at 1/8 reverse versus 3/8?

On a span over 5 inches...that would be....unusual?  Hole the proper size..

Do you add tape when the thumb is smaller some days?

Read Ron Clifton's article...(There are 3-4 sections to it.)

http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/btm05_files/btm5.htm

How long is your thumb?
I bevel the back of my thumb to clear the front of the hole.
I like a beveled front edge, but no to much.

i don't have anything @ 1/8 reverse
im 1/8 right lateral on the thumb

im not squeezing the b_jesus out of it, but i am still squeezing none the less

yes i add tape when needed
hole size is too large to begin with

im gonna go see Ron tomorrow and im bringing a ball to punch up

thanks again feel free to post as much as you want on the topic

i think by moving forward im in the minority, but in theory it makes sense to move forward

I use 3/8 forward but have a very stiff thumb and that should be the determining factor in what you decide.

I would go with 3/16 forward and 1/8 left lateral to start with and see what it feels like. Once you learn to relax your hand and trust that you will not drop the ball you will know if it is right or not.

Thanks for the refresher with Ron's note, I have a friend that visits him often and he has spoken highly of Ron. He said Ron stated it took 3/4" forward for some people to stop squeezing the ball.

What I can tell from previous experience.  Is experiment.  Find a ball that you can keep re-slugging and just change the pitch (I am assuming that the span is good.  I tried going to 1/8 forward about 5 years ago, I almost broke my thumb as I could not get it out of the ball (my span is 4 11/16 and 4 13/16 thumb is 2 3/4 inches long).  I am at 1/4 reverse could probably do 3/16 but I did try 1/8 and I hung up on some shots.  I am also a 1/16 left which keeps me in the ball a bit longer.  If you have a good driller or someone that will work with you and just charge you the cost of slugs, it is worthwhile trying things out.  Best of luck.
