High track players, are we damned ?
« on: November 07, 2005, 07:13:13 PM »
Being a high track player, I've realized that I track over the thumbhole sometimes. I've been a high track player ever since I've learned to hook the ball.

While searching on the brunswick website drilling instructions, I've found that there aren't any early roll drilling options since it mentions something about tracking over finger holes (please use 1L, or 2L,3L,or 4L instead)

Is there anyways to alter your release so you are no longer a high track player? Or is it something to do with drilling or the balls themselves?

Not much you can do with drilling to affect that.

Basically, if you clip the finger/thumb holes you roll the ball very end over end.  You need to learn to rotate your hand around the ball at release.  Now, I am not saying alot, but just turn your hand slightly at release like you are going to shake hands with someone.  This *should lower your track away from the fingers/thumb.

Someone that tracks over the finger/thumb have a long pap measurement, like 6" from center of grip.  My PAP is 5 1/2, 1/2 up.  I can use pin under drillings with no problems.

In Bill Taylor's book, "Fitting and Drilling a Bowling Ball", he talks of changing the finger pitches laterally to get the hand to come around the ball more, creating more tilt and moving the track off of the thumb. This works if the track is barely clipping the hole, not more than a quarter of an inch.

If you are hitting dead center of the thumb you might want to try getting your thumb out of the ball during the release as it crosses your non-sliding leg in the down swing and turning the ball with your fingers. This also should pull your track away from the thumb. You will have to learn to adjust how much though, if you throw a spin biscuit then that would be too much, unless the lanes are torched.
