Offset thumb users
« on: April 17, 2008, 02:05:54 PM »
My ball driller said that offset thumb drilling put the ball more on the hand. However he's not in favor of it as he claimed that it may reduce the revs.

1) Is that true?
2) Does it somehow affect the rotation of the ball? (I mean the axis rotation)

If someone changes to offset thumb drilling is there any guides on the Thumb pitch? I'm assuming that the pitch will be more to the left with some reverse in it.

Any response is much appreciated. Thank you

No such thing as offset.  Your span is your span.  If you want to lengthen the ring finger go ahead...  Just don't hurt yourself.

Andrew, you don't have to lengthen the RF to put more hand on the ball. It is a matter of how you drill the finger and thumb pitches. For a right hander, the finger pitches are drilled off the originaly drawn grip line and then a new grip line is drawn left of this grip line which varies per bowler but 1/4 - 5/16 for me, 1/2" for my one of my drillers. Then the thumb pitch is drilled off the new grip line, thus giving the ball the appearance of an off-set thumb even though it isn't really offset.

what you can alter is the pitch.... I have the thumb turned a tad outside and put a tad left ("offset") to get a bit more tension on the ring finger to create a tad more revs and have the ball more on the hand

imho it works... Drillers have more of a clue I guess...

Agreed.  No such thing as offset.  I can take any ball where the span to the ring finger is longer than the span to the middle finger and make it appear "offset".

I have an offset thumb & it feels great.  The ball does sit in my hand better.  You might lose some revs in the beginning because your not used to it, but once you are... I didn't get a drastic offset & I wouldn't go all crazy w/different lateral pitches.  Maybe start with 1/8 in or 0 pitch before going to away pitches.  Find out what works best for you & then stick w/it.  I think they have those grips that you can change yourself.

Greg cmon on now.  YOUr lines don't much up in that 1st picture!!  ANd the finger grips are in the same position in both pictures.  You can't use those photos in your argument, LOL!!!  Nice try.  I have an offset thumb so I know there is such a thing.

We've been over this.  By definition, it is physically impossible to off-set the thumb from the center of the grip.  As soon as you move the thumb left, the grip center changes and the ring finger span lengthens.  The orientation of any oval in the fingers/thumb may change, but you still are technically not offsetting the thumb left of the center of the grip.  It goes against all laws of geometry.

Dan is right about the laws of geometry.  There is only one way that a triangle can be layed onto a sphere and have the same numbers in the triangle.  If you "offset" one of the holes, then you have changed the numbers of the triangle.  The thumb hole is not offset, it is just now a different triangle and now one that may not fit your hand.

Getting the ball to feel like it sits in your hand can be done by manipulating the pitches.

I have some other grip thoughts, but don't want to swerve into a hijack.......

so chris please enlighten us on how you layout your offset thumbhole...do you change pitch in fingerholes, what about thumb pitch...i bet you can measure your span with your "offset" thumbhole and layout a ball using the t-grip with the same pitches...i cant resist...offsetnoexist

THATS A DIFFERENCE.
The pitch may change, but believe it or not, the thumb is still located at the center of the true grip, no matter how you measure it.  That's my point.  "Offset" is a misnomer.

Can you say "center line transfer"?

Drilling a ball this way does change pitches of conventional T grip measurements & grips are rotated to match the new center line.

After laying out a ball this way, you can measure & gauge pitches off the original T grip center line & duplicate drilling the regular way & just turn grips accordingly.

MHO there is no such thing as a true offset thumb.
