Plug or just re-slug?
« on: September 14, 2006, 05:48:43 AM »
I traded for an action in which the thumb has been plugged onced and since double slugged.  The pin is above the ring which has cracked into where the the hole is.  My question is with the thumb, should I get both slugs taken out and the plug drilled out and completely plug that hole or just put another slug in it?  Also with the pin being cracked and running into the finger hole, would it be better to plug that and just redrill hoping that the plugging seeps into the crack making it stronger or just put the inserts in and go from there?  Just wanting some personal opinions.  Wanted to try an action and get a great deal at the local pro shop on fixing equipment so that's not an issue.  Just wondering what you think is the best thing to do.

If it were mine, I'd pull the slug(s) out and reslug it with a larger slug. The finger, I'd plug and redrill. May not be what others would do, but if were my ball, that'd be my plan of attack.

Since price is not an issue, I'd completely replug the ball so the layout will be exactly what you want.  --  JohnP

As an aside, I've never heard of double slugging a ball.  I thought it was SOP to drill out the old slug and put in a new one.

I have just drilled most of the existing slug out using the new pitch and put in a new slug. Part of the old slug remains in the ball to fill in the gap of the old pitch.

I am assuming double slugging is when you change the span and use the existing slug in place of ball plug instead, so both slugs are visible in the ball. I've seen it done before, but I prefer to either plug or use a larger slug if possible.

I've had a couple balls that were double slugged.  Didnt like it but it did work just fine.  I appreciate the help.  Took it to him tonight with the suggestions I got to see what he thought the best plan of attack was.  He's going to drill out all the plugging/ slugs and plug the entire hole.  Also going to drill small holes to get rid of the crack running from the finger to through the pin.  This is going to envolve drilling the pin out but he's going to just fill that hole with different color plug so there will still be a normal pin.  Thanks for the help everyone.

Yes I am.  That is after we manage to find the money for everything.  I forgot how expensive everything was.  Our fundraisers have failed miserably so far.  We practice out at North every Tuesday night and starting this saturday as well after we help coach the juniors.
