Rogue and Mars drilling suggestions
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:02:34 AM »
I know there have been several posts on this topic, but I am looking for recommendations based on my current arsenal and profile. I was thinking using 5 x 3 x 2 3/4 buffer on the Rogue for breakpoint control, but want to make sure this will give me more backen than my pin up Cell, and 4x4 2" buffer for the Mars.  I want the Mars to have the length of the Pluto with the backend of the Venus. Any thoughts?

PAP - 5 3/8 - 5/8 up
Speed - 19.1 cats (off hand)
Speed dominant
Revs - 400-450 cats
rotation - 55+ degrees
tilt - less than 15*

Current Arsenal:
Storm:
Gravity Shift - 5x3 (2" val buffer)

Roto Grip:
Rogue Cell - 5x3 2 1/2 buffer
Cell - 4 1/2 pin up x 4
Cell - 5" pin down 45*
Cell Pearl - RICO
Cell Pearl - 5 x 4 pin up
Neptune - 5 3/4 x 5 pin down
Venus - 4 x 4 3" buffer
Pluto - 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 pin down
Mars - Undrilled

i would think that if you drill the rogue similar to what your pin up cell is, that it will be stronger in the backend than your cell. at least based on what i am hearing about the rogue, as well as coverstock, and surface.

as for mars, i am not real familiar with the planet line, but according to your layouts for the pluto and venus, i would suggest going 4 1/2" like you have for both balls. but put the pin up on mars, so that it will get down lane like venus, but have more backend than pluto. and since the pin is down on pluto, it probably has a strong roll, instead of a snap. how is your cell pearl compared to your venus?
good luck!

I went ahead and drilled the Rogue 5x3 with a 2 1/2" buffer.  OOB, it was too strong for our THS.  It has a very heavy midlane read with a strong arching backend.  I am going to try it Sunday on a 40' flat, then change the surface for league.

I am still waiting on the Mars so I have some time to decide on the layout.

As for my Cell Pearls, I am thinking of replacing them with a HyRoad and maybe a D2.  I have tried several surfaces on both and just cannot seem to match up with either.  They either get squirty on me or read too early.  I love the Cells, so it must just be the cover that I dont match up with.

What about bringing the cover down and using some different polish?  I know a guy that loves his Storm equipment but hates the factory polish they use.  He knocks the factory polish off and uses Ebonites factory finish polish.

Chitown,
I took your suggestion and tried a different brand polish on the pearls.  In the past, i have tried several abralon grits with and without storm step 1,2,3, tried 2 of their polishes, and never liked the reactions.  This weekend I took them down to 1000 (RICO) and 2000 with Track magic shine.  Now I am getting a great reaction from both of them.  I never realized the difference between different manufatures products.  Thanks!

Any other suggestions for the Mars from anyone?  It will be getting drilled Wednesday.

I'm glad it worked for you.

One would think that any polish should give the same result.  It's just not the case.  I've always had pretty good results with Hammer's pearlized equipment.  So I purchased a bottle of their factory finish polish and have had great results.

Tracks delayed reaction is another polish that works very well.  The delayed reaction has slip agents in the polish and tames down over-reacting backend reactions.
