Help with LevRG layout ?
« on: February 10, 2008, 11:37:31 PM »
Hey people I am having trouble with this ball.  I have a 17mph speed and not too much wrist.  I am working on the wrist.  This ball does not hook.  It has a label drill that the guy at the pro shop thought would be best, but this thing doesn't work.  Many people tried telling me to slow this thing down, but this is not comfortable for me.  I saw another post that said that I needed a stronger coverstock, but what balls fit my style.  I stand in middle of lane and throw out to second arrow.  This ball does not allow me to do this, all that happens is a bunch of skid and no hook right into the gutter.  I have to stand towards right end of lane and throw with no wrist, an open handed release and the ball goes straight and then decides to hook.  This is not comfortable either. I am probably going to be told to get lessons.  I am working on this as well.  Maybe someone out there that has same style, might be able to help.  Thanks much

3deep -
Do you own any other bowling balls? How did they react on the same pattern?
Is the lane condition oily or dry? Can you see a lot of oil rings on the ball?
Any chance we can get pics of the layout to confirm the drill pattern?

With little hand and high speed, you are going to find that most balls will go long and not make the turn. I am also speed dominant with lower revs, and I notice that only on drier lanes can I swing my LevRG (start 20 at dots, 8 at breakpoint). Most of the time I play a line of 12-8 or similar. If it gets too dry, I notice that the ball burns up in the heads and mids and fails to finish.

I'm not sure that you or I would be able to send a ball long with great snap at the back end due to our revs, so I think a surface change to give you a nice arc might be a better (safer) choice.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Thanks for the reply 1mecheng.  There aren't too many oul rings on my ball when I bowl so I would say the lanes are on the drier side.  I have pics of the ball but cant seem to post them.  how can I post them?

Go to www.imageshack.us and upload your picture there, then you can copy the link and post it here.

And yes, I'm going to say it's very possible the LevRG is burning up -- that is a STRONG ball and it needs oil to save its energy so it can hook on the backend.  But also, I do agree with your first post -- you probably should work with a coach to improve your release.  There is no magic fix when it comes to bowling -- worry about your release before you worry about your equipment.

Try signing up for photobucket or putfile. I use photobucket.com - seems OK and it's easy to use.

If there aren't many oil rings on the ball, I might speculate that it's too dry for the ball, and it's burning up early.

My first impression based on the pics is that the ball is drilled to be a control ball for higher rev players.

I would have expected to see the pin above ring finger and right of it, with the mass bias more towards the pap. This drilling that I am referencing will typically produce a stonger backend reaction for players will lower revs and higher speed.

See the appropriate Morich info sheet that came with the ball here http://morichbowling.com/LevRG/InfoSheet.asp and decide for yourself. (Since we don't know your PAP or tilt, or your track diameter, you will need to pick the correct sheet).

Look at the sheets and let us know what you think the drilling should be.

I never really found my pap.  I think you are saying that the layout should be sharp break point for medium track players.  I never really knew the difference of the high, medium, and low track players.  I know the pros are all high track players.  I am not know where near the pros.  I know it sounds stupid but what is the difference between the tracks.  I follow through behind the ball and release it at about the 9 o'clock position and follow through.  Thanks

Your pro shop should be able to determine your axis tilt and PAP, and will be able to tell you if you are a low/med/high track bowler.

This might also help: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kennmelvin/tTracks.htm
Full roller = high track
Semi-Roller = med track
Spinner = low track

Thanks 1MechEng I remember when I would go bowling a couple of years ago I used my uncles ball and I would get the Semi roller track on his red wolf.  So I guess this would mean I am a medium track player with his ball.  I am going to my proshop and I am going to find my pap.  I appreciate all the help and if I did get it plugged and redrilled, should I try the Sharp break point for the medium track player?

First things first - I would wait and have your driller confirm your PAP and track diameter. Then decide on the ball reaction.

The other question to ask is: what lane conditions are you bowling on? Your driller might also know the answer to that question as well, if he is located in the house that you do most of your bowling at. League shots vs. open play vs. tournament shots are all very different from each other, and dictate different drillings and different approaches to the game (including release/trajectory/ball surface adjustments).

Your goal in drilling the ball will be to try to match the performance of the ball with the ability of the person on a given lane condition to get a desired reaction.

Let us know what your driller says with respect to your PAP, track, and the lane conditions, and then we can talk some more about the layout and reaction you want.

Your layout on this ball is all relative to YOUR pap!  My PAP is 5 3/8 over and 1/4 up and the layout you have on your LEVRG would be very strong for me.

My guess is the lanes your bowling on are way too dry for this ball.  The ball is probably burning up all it's energy going down the lane.  The other thing that could cause you to experience this is your playing the wrong part of the lane.  All bowling balls need dry boards to hook.  If your singing the ball out into a bunch of oil, chances are it's not going to hook.

I have a LEVRG and it's very freaking strong!  I have yet to use mine on a really long heavy pattern and it's too strong for the lighter oil.  Light oil makes this ball hard to control because it's so strong in the mid-lane and angular on the back end.  So your either playing in too much oil and no dry boards for the ball to grab or the lanes are so dry the ball is burning up beyond belief!
